(Courtesy Tobyhanna Army Depot)<\/p>\nA $37.6 million project designed to provide military families with modern, affordable housing at Tobyhanna Army Depot is progressing as site preparation nears completion, depot officials said.<\/p>\n
A groundbreaking for Cadence Communities at Tobyhanna in Coolbaugh Twp. was held in May.<\/p>\n
Twenty-six of 28 homes in the depot\u2019s Tobyhanna Pines development built in 1978 were demolished and will be replaced by 35 new units, officials said. The other two homes, built in 2011, will remain part of the property.<\/p>\n
The new development will feature 17 duplex-style buildings containing a mix of 19 four-bedroom and 16 three-bedroom units, depot officials said. One of the four-bedroom homes will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.<\/p>\n
\u201cApproximately 99% of the underground work and site prep is complete,\u201d Colleen Gavin, the depot\u2019s family housing and barracks manager, said in a news release. \u201cThe only thing we have left to do for site prep is finish underground mechanicals.\u201d<\/p>\n
The project is a collaboration between the depot and Centinel as part of the Army\u2019s Small Installation Privatization Initiative to revitalize military housing across the country, depot officials said. Centinel is a public partnership that works to develop quality military housing and lodging communities.<\/p>\n
Gavin said crews should start pouring the first building foundation by the end of the month.<\/p>\n

Depot officials announced a projected June 2027 completion date for the entire project but noted some military families might have an opportunity to move in earlier throughout the construction process.<\/p>\n
Gavin sees growing interest daily from families looking to reside on-post at Tobyhanna Army Depot.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think we\u2019re going to build it and they\u2019re going to come,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
As the workforce continues to change and expand, the project will provide housing for personnel supporting Tobyhanna\u2019s High Tech Regional Training Site-Maintenance mission and other tenant organizations, officials said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSeeing this project move into the construction phase is an important step forward for Tobyhanna,\u201d depot Commander Col. Benjamin L. Kilgore said in the release. \u201cWhile there is still work ahead, this effort reflects our continued commitment to investing in our people and strengthening the installation.
