Here\u2019s a project that helps kids learn a new art form: Embroidery. This Maker Monday \u201cLet\u2019s Try\u201d video, created and shared with us by our friends at the Children\u2019s Museum of Pittsburgh<\/a>, will teach kids the skills they need to start embroidering. We\u2019re excited to bring you this free maker activity.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll find all the details on materials and instructions right here, and you can follow along on the video below to learn each easy step. One note: Although we normally post Maker Monday projects that can be done entirely with items you\u2019re likely to have around the house, this project requires just one item you may not have \u2014 an embroidery hoop. These are available for just a couple of dollars at dollar stores, craft stores, in the craft aisle at \u201cbig box\u201d stores or via Amazon.<\/p>\n

A note to kid\u00a0makers: Please work with a parent or caregiver on every project and always be very careful when using tools of any kind.<\/p>\n

Maker Monday materials you\u2019ll need:<\/p>\n

embroidery hoop
\nneedle
\nthread
\npencil
\na piece of fabric (cotton, linen or muslin)<\/p>\n

Instructions:<\/p>\n

Press your fabric between embroidery hoop rings and tighten, like creating a drum
\nDraw your design on the fabric with your pencil
\nThread the needle and tie a knot at the end of the thread
\nSew your design by pushing the needle through the fabric and pulling until it reaches the knot.
\nThen repeat through the back of the fabric, continuing until the design is complete.
\nWhen the design is complete, use scissors to cut the excess thread from the knot on the front.
\nTie a knot on the back of the fabric and cut the excess thread from there.
\nThen remove the fabric from the embroidery ring.<\/p>\n
