PITTSBURGH\u2019S ACTION NEWS FOUR REPORTER CARLOS FLORES HAS MORE FROM PERRYOPOLIS. THIS AFTERNOON ON A SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUNG FEMALE FOOTBALL FANS. TODAY, HUNDREDS OF GIRLS ACROSS THE PITTSBURGH AREA ARE GETTING ACTIVE AND LEARNING A VITAL, LIFE SAVING SKILL. THANKS TO THE OFF THE FIELD NFL WIVES ASSOCIATION AND THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION. AND ORGANIZERS SAY THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING. IT WAS ALL ABOUT GETTING ACTIVE AND LEARNING VITAL SKILLS. THIS MORNING, THE OFF THE FIELD NFL WIVES ASSOCIATION AND THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION TEAMING UP TO BRING 600 GIRLS TOGETHER FROM SCHOOLS ACROSS THE PITTSBURGH AREA FOR THIS EVENT. OUR COACH TOLD US AT PRACTICE ONE DAY AND WAS KIND OF JUST LIKE, DO ANY OF YOU GUYS WANT TO GO? AND OBVIOUSLY WE\u2019RE ALL LIKE, YES, OH MY GOSH, WE WANT TO GO. LEADERS WITH THE NFL WIVES ASSOCIATION SAYING EVENTS LIKE TODAY HELPS THEM EXPAND THE SPORT OF FLAG FOOTBALL FOR GIRLS. THE SPORT ITSELF IS RAPIDLY EXPANDING, BUT IT\u2019S OUR JOB BEHIND THE SCENES TO SEE WHAT ATHLETE IS OUT THERE THAT HAS A DESIRE TO PLAY, BUT THEY CAN\u2019T ACCESS THAT PLAY FOR SOME CAPACITY. SO WHETHER IT BE FINANCIAL MEANS, WHETHER IT BE EQUIPMENT LIKE NOT HAVING ACCESS TO DEODORANT, SPORTS BRAS, CLEATS, WHATEVER IT MAY BE, HOW CAN WE ADDRESS THOSE BARRIERS BEHIND THE SCENES SO THOSE KIDS HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO PURSUE THEIR DREAMS? AS FOR THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION, THE MORE PEOPLE THAT KNOW HANDS ON CPR, THE BETTER. THEY\u2019RE GOING TO LEARN SOMETHING TODAY THAT THEY\u2019RE GOING TO TAKE WITH THEM FOREVER. AND IF THEY EVE NEED THAT SKILL, THEY\u2019RE GOING TO BE ABLE TO PULL THAT MUSCLE MEMORY. AND THIS IS JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG. AS THE PITTSBURGH AREA IS JUST DAYS AWAY FROM THE 2026 NFL DRAFT. HONESTLY, A PART OF WHY WE\u2019RE SO EXCITED IS BECAUSE, LIKE, THIS IS A PART OF LIKE THE DRAFT WEEK. AND I KNOW A FEW OF US ARE GOING PLANNING ON HEADING DOWN. Students like Tess Oviero said she and her teammate were excited about the opportunity. &#8220;Our coach told us at practice the one day, and was kind of just like, oh, right. If you guys want to go. And obviously we&#8217;re all like, yes, oh my gosh, you got to go,&#8221; Oviero said.  Elgendy addressed the obstacles that prevent young athletes from participating in sports like flag football. &#8220;The sport itself is rapidly expanding. But it&#8217;s our job behind the scenes to see, well, what athlete is out there that has a desire to play, but they can&#8217;t access that play for some capacity. So, whether it be financial means, whether it be equipment like not having access to deodorant, sports bras, cleats, whatever it may be, how can we address those barriers behind the scenes? So those kids have an opportunity to pursue their dreams,&#8221; Elgendy said.  &#8220;They&#8217;re going to learn something today that they&#8217;re going to take with them forever. And if they ever need that skill, they&#8217;re going to be able to pull that muscle memory,&#8221; Linzy Cotaya, national director of the American Heart Association, said. Oviero said she was excited for the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft festivities in Pittsburgh. &#8220;Honestly, a part of why we&#8217;re so excited is because, like, this is a part of like the draft week.
