{"id":172720,"date":"2026-04-22T11:26:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T11:26:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/172720\/"},"modified":"2026-04-22T11:26:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T11:26:07","slug":"violent-crime-on-septa-continues-to-drop-in-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/172720\/","title":{"rendered":"Violent crime on SEPTA continues to drop in 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Philly and the Pa. suburbs to South Jersey and Delaware, what would you like WHYY News to cover? <a href=\"#Section1\">Let us know!<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>SEPTA is reporting another <a href=\"https:\/\/wwww.septa.org\/news\/first-quarter-crime-report-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">significant drop in crime<\/a> across its network, including a 42% drop on the Market-Frankford Line during the first quarter of 2026, after reporting 10-year lows last year.\n<\/p>\n<p>According to the agency<a href=\"https:\/\/wwww.septa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/page\/police\/2026-1st-Quarter-Final.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2019s first-quarter crime report<\/a>, SEPTA Transit Police reported a 30% reduction in serious crimes from January to March compared to the same period last year, including double-digit reductions in five serious crime categories such as aggravated assaults and robberies.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince peaking during the pandemic, crime across the system has consistently declined,\u201d SEPTA General Manager Scott Sauer said in a statement. \u201cThis progress is the result of a comprehensive approach that combines increased staffing, targeted enforcement, investments in modern technology, and improvements to station and vehicle infrastructure.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p>Reported fare evasion has dropped 10% so far this year. Efforts to tackle fare evasion have increased since SEPTA reported <a href=\"https:\/\/wwww.septa.org\/news\/septa-expands-pilot-program-to-combat-fare-evasion\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">losing roughly $30 million to fare evasion<\/a> in 2024. That same year, SEPTA installed its <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/septa-new-gates-turnstile-jumping\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first full-length fare gate at 69th Street Station<\/a>. Similar gates are now installed at the Somerset, Huntingdon, Cecil B.
