{"id":172724,"date":"2026-04-22T11:32:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T11:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/172724\/"},"modified":"2026-04-22T11:32:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T11:32:11","slug":"new-poll-shows-growing-number-of-pennsylvanians-think-vaccines-cause-autism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/172724\/","title":{"rendered":"New poll shows growing number of Pennsylvanians think vaccines cause autism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new poll examining Pennsylvanians\u2019 opinions on public health shows a growing number of commonwealth residents believe unsubstantiated claims that childhood immunizations are linked to autism.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The annual health survey, conducted by Muhlenberg College\u2019s Institute of Public Opinion, reveals that 37% of Pennsylvanians \u201cstrongly\u201d or \u201csomewhat\u201d agree that recommended childhood vaccines increase the risk of autism \u2013 the highest rate recorded in the 14-year history of the college\u2019s annual poll.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 37% figure also represents a 25-point increase in the share of Pennsylvanians who believe childhood immunizations are linked to autism since 2021, when just 11% of Pennsylvanians \u201cstrongly\u201d or \u201csomewhat\u201d agreed that there was a link between vaccines and autism.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chris Borick, a political science professor and director of the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion, told City &amp; State that there are a few potential factors that could be contributing to Pennsylvanians\u2019 shifting views on vaccines, including conversations about vaccines entering the public discourse during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the appointment of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy has claimed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/video\/6330950198112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cautism does come from vaccines,\u201d<\/a> and has said that he personally directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/11\/21\/rfk-jr-vaccines-autism-cdc-00665361\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">remove language from their website<\/a> stating that vaccines do not cause autism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen elites \u2013 be it elected officials, people in the media, celebrities, whoever \u2013 communicate positions and people trust them and they find a connection, people will respond \u2013 and that\u2019s what\u2019s happened,\u201d Borick said of Kennedy. \u201cHe certainly \u2026 had a role in the shifting public attitudes that we\u2019ve seen in the last two years, and his place in the minds of Pennsylvanians is quite polarizing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The poll, which surveyed 500 adult residents between March 10 and March 17, also examined whether Pennsylvanians trust Kennedy to handle healthcare issues: 57% said they have \u201cnot too much\u201d or \u201cno trust at all\u201d in Kennedy, while 39% said they have either \u201csome\u201d or \u201ca lot of trust\u201d in the HHS secretary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s an impactful figure,\u201d Borick added. \u201cHe\u2019s not someone that a majority of Pennsylvanians turn to for healthcare advice or health information, but among those that do, he matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Healthcare access and affordability<\/p>\n<p>The Muhlenberg College poll also surveyed Pennsylvanians on healthcare affordability and access, with roughly a quarter saying they have had trouble accessing healthcare due to cost, or that someone in their household has.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the poll, 26% of respondents said the cost of healthcare has made it difficult to access care, while 71% said they have not been affected by the cost of care.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When asked what the greatest threat to public health is Pennsylvania, 21% said cost and access to healthcare are their chief concerns; 9% said President Donald Trump, Kennedy and Republicans are their top concern, and 8% listed health infrastructure, including access to hospitals and doctors, as their primary concern.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Borick noted that the topic of affordability has dominated the nation\u2019s political discourse in recent years \u2013 an issue that he said appears to carry over into healthcare based on the poll\u2019s findings. \u201cThe issues of affordability and cost that seem to permeate lots of our political discussions right now are easily located in these poll results,\u201d Borick said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>AI chatbots and health<\/p>\n<p>The survey also polled Pennsylvanians on their trust in artificial intelligence chatbots to advise them on healthcare \u2013 and an overwhelming number of Pennsylvanians expressed distrust in chatbots&#8217;
