The Barber National Institute has unveiled the Lake Erie Odyssey, a new adapted obstacle\u2011course event launching this fall.<\/p>\n
It replaces the long\u2011running Barber Beast on the Bay, which ended last summer after gaining national recognition for its inclusive, adapted course.<\/p>\n
For years, the Barber Beast on the Bay was not just a race \u2014 it was also a major fundraiser.<\/p>\n
Much of its national attention came from its adapted course for individuals with disabilities. On Wednesday, organizers confirmed that mission will continue through the new Lake Erie Odyssey, which they say will transform Waldameer Park into a fully adapted obstacle\u2011course experience this fall.<\/p>\n
For many families, the adapted course was the most meaningful part of the Beast \u2014 a day where children and adults with disabilities could complete obstacles alongside everyone else.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has been instrumental in his development and his happiness,\u201d said one parent. \u201cHis dad died 20 years ago, so it\u2019s just me and him. There aren\u2019t any other relatives in the area, and this is like a family to us.\u201d Nancy Shea, a mother shared.<\/p>\n
Organizers say the Lake Erie Odyssey will build on that foundation, turning Waldameer into a space designed for empowerment, inclusion, and community support in a new, expanded way.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople may be most familiar with the Barber Beast on the Bay,\u201d an organizer said. \u201cThis is the adaptive course of the Beast, exponentially. We\u2019re going bigger. We\u2019ll have more obstacles in the adaptive course, go deeper into Waldameer Park, and create more adventure for everyone.\u201d Robert Barber, the senior vice president of The Barber National Institute explained.<\/p>\n
Registration for the Lake Erie Odyssey is now open.
