{"id":173891,"date":"2026-04-23T14:32:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T14:32:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/173891\/"},"modified":"2026-04-23T14:32:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T14:32:08","slug":"american-lung-associations-annual-state-of-the-air-report-shows-mixed-results-for-central-pennsylvania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/173891\/","title":{"rendered":"American Lung Association&#8217;s annual &#8216;State of the Air&#8217; report shows mixed results for central Pennsylvania"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The State College and Altoona areas received mixed grades for air quality in the American Lung Association&#8217;s 2026 \u201cState of the Air\u201d report card.<\/p>\n<p>Released Wednesday, which was Earth Day, the annual report uses federal air quality data to assess how counties, states and metropolitan areas are doing when it comes to ozone levels and particle pollution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s good news and bad news,&#8221; said Kevin Stewart, director of environmental health with the American Lung Association.<\/p>\n<p>On the positive side, he said year-round levels of fine particle pollution continue to improve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this part of the country \u2014 certainly in the eastern part of the United States \u2014 we see, for instance for the State College, Altoona areas, the best-ever that we&#8217;ve seen for that measure of air pollution,&#8221; Stewart said. &#8220;So that&#8217;s good news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Centre and Blair counties both got \u201cD\u201d grades for short-term particle pollution days, measured over the three-year period from 2022 to 2024. That\u2019s in part from the Canadian wildfires. <\/p>\n<p>The Philadelphia and Pittsburgh areas both got \u201cF\u201d grades for ozone smog and particle pollution. Tioga County in northern Pennsylvania, on the other hand, got &#8220;A&#8221; grades.<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"The American Lung Association's 2026 &quot;State of the Air&quot; report includes grades for air quality and ozone levels.\"  width=\"880\" height=\"563\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776954728_35_.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p> American Lung Association<\/p>\n<p> The American Lung Association&#8217;s 2026 &#8220;State of the Air&#8221; report includes <\/p>\n<p>Stewart said in past years, State College area got \u201cA\u201d grades for air days, then it slipped to a \u201cB\u201d and then to a \u201cD\u201d last year and this year. Likewise, the grade for ozone went from an \u201cA\u201d to a \u201cB\u201d last year and this year.
