Continuing its commitment to\u00a0offering its students opportunities to work with\u00a0world-class\u00a0musicians, Performance Music at The University of Scranton<\/a> is delighted to spotlight the work of\u00a0Ahmed Alom\u00a0at its\u00a043rd\u00a0annual World Premiere Composition Series Concert on Saturday,\u00a0May 2.<\/p>\n

The concert\u00a0will\u00a0begin\u00a0at 7:30 p.m.\u00a0in the\u00a0Houlihan-McLean Center, Mulberry Street and Jefferson Avenue, downtown Scranton.\u00a0Admission is free, with seating on a first-come, first-seated\u00a0basis.<\/p>\n

The World Premiere Composition Series provides students with the rare opportunity to perform the premiere of a work by a nationally or internationally known composer under the baton of that composer, getting a first-hand glimpse into the compositional process. Meanwhile, audiences get to experience the piece for the first time exactly as the composer intended.<\/p>\n

At the concert, The University of Scranton\u00a0Concert Choir and Concert Band\u00a0will premiere two brand-new commissioned works by Alom, written specifically for the University\u2019s student ensembles, entitled “A Night \u2013 There Lay the Days Between\u00a0(for SATB choir)” and “A Cuban Landscape\u00a0(for full concert band).”<\/p>\n

“We are\u00a0very excited\u00a0to have Ahmed\u00a0coming\u00a0to work with our students and\u00a0for them\u00a0to have the honor of premiering his new works,” said Cheryl Y. Boga, Artistic Director of Performance Music and conductor.\u00a0\u201cHe first visited Scranton\u00a0a few years ago\u00a0with\u00a0our\u00a0longtime friend Caleb Hudson, and after hearing his incredible playing and\u00a0moving\u00a0compositions,\u00a0we were delighted when he accepted our commission.\u201d<\/p>\n

As\u00a0a pianist,\u00a0composer and conductor,\u00a0Alom\u2019s\u00a0boundary-crossing artistry\u00a0has earned him\u00a0worldwide recognition. His\u00a0musical voice, shaped by the rigor of classical training and the rhythmic vitality of his Cuban heritage, bridges genres and traditions. His compositions have been championed by leading artists, most notably Yuja Wang, who premiered his “Displaced \u00c9tude No. 1”\u00a0with New York Philharmonic.\u00a0As a soloist,\u00a0he has appeared with ensembles and orchestras throughout the\u00a0Western\u00a0Hemisphere.<\/p>\n

A dynamic collaborator, Alom works with artists\u00a0across genres, and\u00a0his ensembles reflect his wide-ranging interests: Triple Cortado \u2014 a chamber trio with Caleb Hudson and Achilles\u00a0Liarmakopoulos \u2014 merges classical virtuosity with contemporary works; while\u00a0CrossCurrents, his duo with Pedrito Mart\u00ednez, explores the intersection of Afro-Cuban traditions and European classical music. His debut album “Exilio\u00a0(2023)” traced narratives of displacement through six Hispanic composers, including the first complete recording of Luis A. Calvo\u2019s “Four Intermezzos.”<\/p>\n

Alom is also the youngest Artistic Director of the Washington Square Music Festival where he curates inclusive and forward-looking programming.
