A petition to relocate this year\u2019s International Congress of Mathematicians from Philadelphia has received over 2,300 signatures.<\/p>\n
The ICM, which has not been hosted in the United States in 40 years, is scheduled to take place in Philadelphia this July despite calls from some to boycott the event due to immigration and visa concerns for participants. Math Department Chair and professor Jonathan Block serves as the co-chair of the congress\u2019 outreach committee.<\/p>\n
Drafted by University of Toronto professor Ila Varma and Haverford College professor Tarik Aougab, the boycott petition<\/a> states that the American government’s \u201cunbridled hatred of immigrants\u201d has created a \u201cserious concern that academics traveling to the US may be denied entry.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Signatories have agreed to boycott the event if it is not relocated outside the U.S.<\/p>\n Block \u2014 who described the conference as \u201cthe most prestigious event in the mathematics community\u201d in a statement to The Daily Pennsylvanian \u2014 wrote that committee members \u201care working to ensure a safe environment for the participants,\u201d adding that they \u201chave not moved the conference or fundamentally changed the venue.\u201d<\/p>\n Get the DP delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n Sign Up<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cMany of the boycotters are motivated by a wide range of political positions,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThere is deep frustration over U.S. \u2018export control\u2019 and sanction laws that have blocked scholars from certain countries (like Iran) from even accessing the registration site.\u201d<\/p>\n In a press release<\/a> shared earlier this month, the petition\u2019s organizers highlighted that the International Mathematical Union moved the 2022 ICM out of Russia in response to a petition that received around 400 signatures.<\/p>\n \u201cNow, despite a petition over five times that size, the IMU refuses to act,\u201d the release added.<\/p>\n In a statement to the DP, Aougab emphasized the importance of ensuring that mathematicians from all around the world are included in events like the ICM.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cCrucially, the spirit of the ICM is that this knowledge sharing should be taking place across cultures,\u201d Aougab wrote. \u201cSuch a goal is fundamentally impossible to achieve in an environment where researchers from over 70 countries can\u2019t even acquire a visa for visiting the host nation.\u201d<\/p>\n Varma also wrote to the DP that maintaining the conference\u2019s presence in the U.S. is \u201cantithetical\u201d to the goal of keeping the community \u201cas open and accessible as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cTo resist this sort of behavior by an increasingly fascist state can only be effectively resisted when every sector comes together and thinks about what they are particularly in a position to do,\u201d he wrote. \u201cOver 2300 mathematicians have come together to say no to the outsized influence of American imperialism on our discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n Despite the controversy, Block wrote that the conference\u2019s organizers will continue to \u201ccelebrate internationalism\u201d and \u201cuse the platform to showcase that mathematics transcends borders.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMathematics is one of the most international of subjects, transcending language and cultural differences,\u201d he added. \u201cIt is important, especially at this time, to demonstrate that international cohesion is possible, important, and desirable.\u201d<\/p>\n Staff reporter Lavanya Mani covers legal affairs and can be reached at mani@thedp.com<\/a>.
