Trucks drove by on a regular basis to toss everything from construction debris to sofas.\n<\/p>\n<p>Today, a freshly painted green fence surrounds a lush community space with pollinator plants waiting to bloom.\n  <\/p>\n<p>The site is one of 10 publicly-owned vacant lots throughout Philadelphia slated to be transformed into community spaces as part of the city\u2019s new pilot program, \u201cLotscapes.\u201d<br \/>\n<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-739386 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/philly-lotscapes-z-read-2026-04-23-5-1024x704.jpg\" alt=\"Officials are speaking at a podium surrounded by workers with planting equipment.\" width=\"640\" height=\"440\"  \/>The City of Philadelphia announced a new pilot program called \u201cLotscapes\u201d that aims to convert vacant lots into green spaces. (Zoe Read\/WHYY)\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think one of the great things about this project is that over the next two to three weeks, you\u2019re going to see those pops of color. These plants are going to start flowering,\u201d said Gerald Bright, assistant director of the city\u2019s Office of Clean and Green Initiatives. \u201cWith some maintenance, it\u2019ll come back year after year, and spread. It\u2019ll fill in so much that it\u2019ll keep the weeds out.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>There are about 40,000 vacant lots throughout Philadelphia, according to city officials, and about 20% of those are publicly owned. Strawberry Mansion has the highest concentration of vacant land in Philadelphia as a result of racist housing policies like redlining, as well as disinvestment and demolitions during the 1960s.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-739388 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/philly-lotscapes-z-read-2026-04-23-3-1024x698.jpg\" alt=\"Workers are planting in the vacant lot.\" width=\"640\" height=\"436\"  \/>Trainees from the city\u2019s Fast Track workforce development program helped to transform a once vacant lot in Strawberry Mansion into a community green space. There was a family, there were houses on this parcel,\u201d said Tonnetta Graham, executive director of the nonprofit group Strawberry Mansion Community Development Corporation.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough a lot of deterioration, a lot of other things that are faults of our own and faults of the system, we lost a lot of families. We lost them because the houses were just dilapidated.
