Josh Shapiro has his way, the Democratic path to winning back the US House will run through his state.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs6sac00053b6qgpjnxzro@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shapiro has committed to helping Democrats flip four Republican-held seats. He\u2019s endorsed in three of the districts, including one where his chosen candidate is locked in a competitive primary. And in a bid to rebuild Pennsylvania\u2019s Democratic Party, Shapiro recruited an ally as state chairman and donated $925,000 from his campaign account this cycle, including $400,000 in April, according to his campaign.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs725u00073b6qw9qry1m9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Winning those seats while running up the score in his own reelection would bolster Shapiro\u2019s political resume if he decides to run for president in 2028. But there is also some political risk for Shapiro, who is betting he can help Democrats oust longtime Republican incumbents and boost his pick in the 7th District.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs77do00093b6qbj16gych@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cJosh is not someone who puts his name behind something without a lot of oomph \u2026 he\u2019s not someone who is going to want to be embarrassed,\u201d said one Pennsylvania Democratic strategist who asked to be anonymous to speak candidly.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs7gey000b3b6qihygrp7a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The governor surprised some Democrats and frustrated others when he recruited and endorsed Bob Brooks, the president of the Pennsylvania Professional Fire Fighters Association, to take on Rep. Ryan Mackenzie.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs7lb1000d3b6q8hafq1db@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Brooks supporters argue he\u2019s better positioned to win over working-class voters in the district than the other three candidates in the race: former federal prosecutor Ryan Crosswell, former nonprofit executive and energy engineer Carol Obando-Derstine, and former Northampton County Executive Lamont McClure.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs7lb1000e3b6qfo5d31vv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think the world of Josh Shapiro, and I think he\u2019s a wonderful governor, and I just could not understand why he would want to involve himself in such a competitive primary,\u201d said former Rep. Susan Wild, who recruited and is backing Obando-Derstine. \u201cInvariably, you\u2019re going to be pissing off several different candidates\u2019 bases.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs7lb1000f3b6q7ylgyxaw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The real challenge will come in November, when Democrats hope to defeat Republican Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick, Rob Bresnahan, Scott Perry, and Mackenzie.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs7ss3000h3b6qhrgze65a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bresnahan and Mackenzie were elected in 2024 after defeating Democratic incumbents in close races. Fitzpatrick and Perry are longtime Democratic targets who have withstood past efforts to unseat them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs7txm000j3b6qoby6jihh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Democrats hope that the favorable midterm environment will help get their candidates over the edge in all four races. They also note that President Donald Trump won\u2019t be on the ballot to help boost turnout. Instead, Shapiro \u2014 who won his 2022 race by 15 points \u2014 will be at the top of the ticket.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs7txm000k3b6qcde4oknr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cGovernor Shapiro is fighting to keep getting stuff done for our Commonwealth and to put a stop to Trump\u2019s chaos, cruelty, and corruption that is harming Pennsylvania families,\u201d Shapiro spokesperson Manuel Bonder said in a statement. \u201cThat means winning this November \u2013 and the Governor is going to keep showing up, delivering his message, and working to elect leaders up and down the ballot who will actually fight for Pennsylvanians and help put an end to Washington\u2019s corruption and disastrous policies.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs81t5000o3b6q8mvwytcb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Democrats\u2019 best pick-up opportunity in the state may be the 7th District. Mackenzie beat Wild in 2024 by just 1 percentage point. Wild, who flipped the district in 2018, chose not to run again.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs89f9000q3b6q1kdz8fb4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Brooks, who has been endorsed by a broad range of state and national politicians, has made Shapiro\u2019s support the centerpiece of his pitch to voters. His<a href=\"https:\/\/brooksforcongress.com\/media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> campaign website\u2019s \u201cred box<\/a>\u201d \u2014 where campaigns signal strategies to super PACs and outside groups \u2014 stresses that it is \u201cmost important that likely Democratic primary voters learn that Brooks is endorsed by Governor Josh Shapiro.\u201d The governor held a fundraiser for Brooks last December and appeared prominently in the Brooks campaign\u2019s first TV ad earlier this month.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs8tbd000s3b6qf1dge1nu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Crosswell, the fundraising leader in the race, noted at a recent debate that he\u2019s brought in more money than his opponents \u201cwithout riding anyone\u2019s coattails.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/02-2025-12-18t110223z-263767058-rc25fiae4enj-rtrmadp-3-usa-election-workers.jpg\" alt=\"Ryan Crosswell speaks during an interview with Reuters in New York on December 12, 2025.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs8wtv000u3b6qgyxemchp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Patty Carlis, a Democratic volunteer from Bethlehem who is leaning toward Crosswell, said she was put off by Brooks\u2019 emphasis on his endorsements.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs9d5600193b6qqwkl9pn9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI want to hear somebody tell me what they\u2019re going to do as a congressperson, who they are as individuals, and what they see as the problems,\u201d Carlis said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs9ih8001b3b6qcoqs299s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She said she\u2019s eager to support Shapiro\u2019s re-election bid, but wished the governor \u201chad more faith in the Democratic voters, that we will pick the person who is the best person to represent us\u201d in the US House primary.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs9mv4001d3b6ql36zix6r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shapiro said in a statement that Brooks has \u201calways had my back\u201d and he\u2019s \u201cproud to endorse him in this race and stand with him in the fight to make life more affordable.\u201d The governor has said he got to know Brooks when the union leader lobbied state lawmakers to pass benefits for firefighters.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs9tlg001f3b6qut0ljwe0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some Brooks critics have pointed to his history of posting right-wing memes on social media. After a gunman killed 23 people in El Paso in 2019, Brooks posted a meme with an image of Clint Eastwood that said: \u201cThe problem is not guns. It\u2019s hearts without God, homes without discipline, schools without prayer and courtrooms without justice.\u201d The post, which was obtained by CNN and written about by local political blogs last year, included a logo associated with the Three Percenters, an anti-government extremist militia group.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs9tlg001g3b6qajd6t5bw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a statement to CNN, Brooks apologized for some of his past posts and asked voters in the district to judge him on his record of service. He said he\u2019s been a Democrat throughout his adulthood.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoc0tghp00003b6qr5ma4unk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPolitics is nasty \u2013 a bunch of DC insiders who don\u2019t want more working people in office are selectively digging up years-old Facebook posts,\u201d he said in the statement. \u201cI\u2019ve shared a few stupid things over the years, and for that I am sorry. I believe who I\u2019ve fought for and my values have always been clear.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs9tlg001h3b6q6ffbjd4o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some Latino leaders also say Brooks hasn\u2019t done enough to introduce himself to their community. The district is 23% Latino; Allentown, the largest city in Lehigh County, is about 56% Latino. Brooks\u2019 allies, including Allentown\u2019s first Latino mayor, Matt Tuerk, say that he\u2019s been attending Latino events in the community.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/03-gettyimages-2266238098.jpg\" alt=\"Bob Brooks speaks alongside Gov. Josh Shapiro at the fire department in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on April 18, 2025.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2476\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs9tlg001i3b6q4myl705l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Victor Martinez, a radio station owner who lives in the district, wrote an opinion piece earlier this year arguing Shapiro had \u201csent the wrong message\u201d and suggested the governor was motivated by a desire to win favor with the firefighters\u2019 union. Shapiro\u2019s office soon reached out, Martinez said, and the governor explained on air that his endorsement was \u201cpersonal,\u201d not political.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs9tlg001j3b6qrc4zv2in@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe reason why I stepped up to support Bob is because I believe in him,\u201d Shapiro said on Martinez\u2019s show, \u201cEl Relajo de la Ma\u00f1ana.\u201d \u201cI know we may be on different sides of this, but I think we can both agree that whoever emerges from the primary, we\u2019re going to be 100% in for them, and they have to beat Ryan Mackenzie.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs9tlg001k3b6qpgtpi0rw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As far as the primary is concerned, the two have agreed to disagree.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs9tlg001l3b6qcv7b5xkm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think there\u2019s a little bit of political gambling that the governor did, especially in a year that he\u2019s running for reelection,\u201d Martinez said. \u201cBut I appreciate him not being afraid and just saying, \u2018Hey, if he loses, he loses. I think he\u2019s going to win, and I\u2019m all in.\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs9w66001n3b6qprrmetbr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Brooks supporters argue his profile as a working-class everyman who has been a firefighter, a bartender, and now runs a snow removal and lawn care business makes him the best positioned to reach the voters who narrowly handed the seat to Republicans last cycle.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobs9zf0001p3b6qwon7hvsa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBob has a really important skill in politics, which is turning a prospective weakness into a strength,\u201d said state Rep. Mike Schlossberg, who has endorsed Brooks. \u201cHe spoke about the fact that he knows what it\u2019s like, personally, to be behind in your mortgage and to have financial difficulties, and he can talk to those people with more credibility than I think anybody else in the field can.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobsac1q001v3b6qxmtae7lh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Cook Political Report has rated the 7th District a toss-up, along with the 8th District, where Bresnahan will likely face Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti, and the 10th District, where Perry is likely to face a rematch against former local news anchor Janelle Stelson.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobsahgy001x3b6qj9y6jpu3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The 1st District, where Democratic Bucks County Commissioner Bob Harvie is challenging Fitzpatrick, is rated likely Republican.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobsahgy001y3b6q53sdyul4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI look at Fitzpatrick as probably the toughest to beat, but eventually you run out of luck,\u201d said Mike Mikus, a Pennsylvania-based Democratic strategist. \u201cYou just can\u2019t hold on anymore when you\u2019re swimming against the tide.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobsahgy001z3b6qxg1jx8ty@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Republicans are optimistic they\u2019ll hold at least some of the four seats.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobsahgy00203b6qxjdx5a08@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI would say good luck,\u201d Chris Pack, a Republican strategist who runs a super PAC backing Fitzpatrick, said of Democrats\u2019 odds in the four races.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/04-gettyimages-2250492268.jpg\" alt=\"Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick arrives at the US Capitol on December 10, 2025.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobsahgy00213b6q16sl9zrk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Fitzpatrick, a five-term incumbent and former FBI agent, kept his seat during the 2018 Democratic wave and in 2024, when former Vice President Kamala Harris carried his district even as Trump won statewide.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobsahgy00223b6qa8rknmqs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Democrats have pointed to their wins in 2025 in Bucks County, which encompasses most of the district. Harvie has argued he\u2019s a stronger candidate than past challengers because he\u2019s from the district and has been elected countywide in 2019 and 2023.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobsahgz00233b6qjh6ecxlf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI had somebody ask recently, \u2018How am I going to get the people who vote for Fitzpatrick to vote for me?\u2019\u201d Harvie said. \u201cAnd my answer was, \u2018I already have.\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobsahgz00243b6q60srb2c1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shapiro has endorsed Cognetti and Stelson and is expected to endorse Harvie soon, according to two sources familiar with the governor\u2019s plans.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobsahgz00253b6qh4r7cutp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rep. Chris DeLuzio, a Pennsylvania Democrat,  praised the governor for leaning in on the races.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobsahgz00263b6qrwzgnj24@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cJosh Shapiro has been a great partner for me and others who are trying to take back the House,\u201d DeLuzio said. \u201cI know, as does he, that the majority could run through Pennsylvania.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"If Pennsylvania Gov.
