Upper Darby officials on Friday celebrated the opening of a vital section of Naylor\u2019s Run Trail.<\/p>\n

The quarter-mile Section 5A joins Garrett Road to Marshall Road.<\/p>\n

Officials gathered at the trail entrance across from Naylor\u2019s Run Park for the ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the section, which is designed to improve connectivity and accessibility within the township.<\/p>\n

This newly completed trail segment provides a safe and fully accessible route linking Garrett Road and Marshall Road, joining the Barclay Center and Naylor\u2019s Run Park with the Beverly Hills Recreation area where they are planning the community center.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile it may not be the longest distance, the quarter mile represents quite a bit,\u201d said Mayor Ed Brown, adding that the trail offers a safe connection between the two busy roads and is accessible for all.<\/p>\n

Brown said the trail is designed with inclusivity in mind. It accommodates residents of all ages and abilities, including children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.<\/p>\n

Beyond improving connectivity, the project reflects Upper Darby\u2019s continued investment in public spaces that promote health, wellness and outdoor recreation. Residents and visitors alike will benefit from increased access to nature, fresh air, and safe walking routes, the township said.<\/p>\n

State Rep. Gina Curry, D-164, who represents the township, said she was really excited about the improvement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe young people here, it is so important to know, we have them in mind when we are creating these spaces. Young folks who are building their families have places to go and don\u2019t have to go to another township,\u201d Curry said. \u201cIt is great we can have it here at home and it will attract young families to say they have trails, great playgrounds. These are the things young families are looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new trail adds to a number improved trails in the township, including a short section at State Road and Township Line Road, a trail in Stonehurst and the trail near the Swedish Cabin. Brown said a new bridge will connect a new section of that trail.<\/p>\n

Rita LaRue, township director of Community & Economic Development, said the township is in the design phase for a pedestrian bridge that will allow residents to get across Marshall Road safely to the community center.<\/p>\n

Construction of the Naylor\u2019s Run Tail extension was finished in January.<\/p>\n

Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, D-5, said it\u2019s been a joy to see the projects come into being.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s more important than ever that we have the opportunity to be out, to be in green spaces, to be able to enjoy nature. To get away from our screens and cellphones,\u201d Scanlon said. \u201cThis is such a beautiful space to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said it takes advocacy, such as was seen by the many officials on hand to make improvements such as the trail happen.<\/p>\n

State Sen. Tim Kearney brought his dog, Chorizo.<\/p>\n

Kearney praised the improvements to the trail: \u201cWe\u2019ve been happy to support trails \u2026 let\u2019s keep doing stuff like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robin Harper, who lives nearby, spoke with Mayor Ed Brown as he led a group on a walk of the new trail.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is where I go all the time. When it wasn\u2019t paved, it was tough because it was muddy. Now it works out perfect. I can fly up and down here and no one bothers me. \u201c<\/p>\n

In a brief interview before the ribbon cutting, Scanlon spoke about the war with Iran.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re coming up on 60 days since the president started this war without authorization. Even our Republican colleagues are getting nervous, antsy, concerned about the fact that the president has put us into a war where there is no objective or end game. I voted for the War Powers resolution several times already and I suspect I will vote several more times.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scanlon also said while drones have changed the warfront she is concerned the president\u2019s budget has put in millions for drones as his sons have invested in a drone company, \u201cthat\u2019s too much self dealing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
