HARRISBURG, PA \u2014 A Lehigh County man was sentenced to prison for posing as a medical professional and providing unauthorized care to patients in Carbon County, Attorney General Dave Sunday said.<\/p>\n
Adam Herman, 45, of Slatington, was sentenced this week to 9 to 24 months in state prison followed by four years of probation and ordered to pay more than $104,000 in restitution.<\/p>\n
Herman pleaded no contest last year to 17 felony counts and one misdemeanor, including Medicaid and insurance fraud, theft by deception, identity theft, practicing medicine without a license, and multiple counts of neglect of a care-dependent person, according to the Attorney General\u2019s Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n Investigators said Herman falsely represented himself as a physician, nurse practitioner, or nurse while treating patients at at least nine personal care and assisted living facilities.<\/p>\n Authorities said he prescribed medications and performed procedures without any medical training or license.<\/p>\n After partnering with a Carbon County doctor in 2022 to operate a medical practice, Herman later used the doctor\u2019s phone and authentication credentials to issue prescriptions and bill insurers without authorization when the doctor became ill, according to investigators.<\/p>\n Officials said patients received improper diagnoses and treatments, including diabetes medications given to individuals without the condition, resulting in illness and weight loss.<\/p>\n \u201cThe defendant\u2019s actions put patients at serious risk and defrauded Medicaid programs,\u201d Sunday said.<\/p>\n Maureen Dixon, special agent in charge of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General, said the conduct \u201cseriously imperiled the health and well-being of vulnerable patients\u201d and misused taxpayer funds.<\/p>\n The case was investigated by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General\u2019s Medicaid Fraud Control Section and Insurance Fraud Section, along with the federal Office of Inspector General, and prosecuted by Senior Deputy Attorneys General Eric J. Stryd and Eric Schoenberg.<\/p>\n
