Made possible through a $5,000 sponsorship from Fleetwood Bank, the playground was designed specifically for children ages three to five with disabilities. The new outdoor space features safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate equipment that supports early learning, exploration, and play-based skill development.

“Today’s celebration represents more than the dedication of a playground—it reflects an investment in our children, our families, and our community,” said Dr. Michelle Reichard-Huff, Director of Early Childhood & Student Services, who welcomed guests and opened the ceremony. “Fleetwood Bank’s continued commitment to strengthening the communities it serves has made a meaningful and lasting impact on our youngest learners.”

The playground will benefit current and future students enrolled in the BCIU’s Early Intervention program, which provides special education services to over 2,800 preschool-age children across Berks County, including those served at the Melrose Plaza location.

Dr. Christi Weitzel, Assistant Director of Early Childhood & Student Services, emphasized the importance of outdoor learning opportunities. “When we moved our Early Intervention classrooms to Melrose Plaza, we knew it was essential to create an outdoor space where children could build social, motor, and problem-solving skills,” she said. “Thanks to Fleetwood Bank, that vision is now a reality, and we are already seeing the positive impact this playground is having on our students.”

“Fleetwood Bank is pleased to be able to partner with Dr. Jill Hackman and the Berks County Intermediate Unit for this important facility,” shared Timothy Snyder, President and CEO of Fleetwood Bank. “While our sponsorship is for the new playground, it is what happens inside this building that has a lasting impact on these children and the community.”

The Berks County Intermediate Unit extends its sincere appreciation to Mr. Snyder and Fleetwood Bank for helping create an inclusive and engaging play space that will support learning, growth, and development for years to come.

On Thursday, April 23, 2026, the Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) celebrated the dedication of a new playground…

[11
128,130,129
post-175983","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-reading","tag-reading-city","tag-reading-city-headlines","tag-reading-city-news
["GET
