The company credited the growth to improved underwriting profitability and significant reductions in catastrophe losses.<\/p>\n<p>The insurer reported earnings of $2.88 per diluted share, up from $2.65 per diluted share in the first quarter of 2025. Operating income also saw a 10% rise, reaching approximately $167 million compared to $151 million a year ago, as reported by The Globe and Mail.<\/p>\n<p>A major shift in leadership occurred as Jonathan Hurtaggen was elected Chairman of the Board, taking over for Tom Hagen. NeCastro added that Hurtaggen carries forward a legacy grounded in long-term perspective.<\/p>\n<p>Financial data revealed that the exchange combined ratio improved to 99.4%, a sharp decline from 108.1% in the prior-year period. This improvement was supported by catastrophe losses that were nearly seven points lower and non-catastrophe losses that dropped by roughly three points.<\/p>\n<p>Direct written premiums grew by 3.6% for the quarter, though this rate was significantly lower than the 13.9% growth recorded in the same period last year. This includes the rollout of ChatGPT Enterprise to all employees and the expansion of the Erie Secure Auto product into Virginia and West Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>Operational expenses rose 2.8% overall, driven by a 6.4% increase in commission expenses to $465 million.
