ALLENTOWN, Pa. | Authorities allege that an Allentown man unhappy with the fact his father wouldn\u2019t give him a ride to Montgomery County led the 28-year-old to beat his father to death.<\/p>\n
Allentown police charged Devon J. Scholl with a felony count of aggravated assault and misdemeanor counts of involuntary manslaughter and simple assault in connection with the roughly six-minute, fatal beating he administered on his father, Todd Scholl. District Judge Karen Devine arraigned Devon Scholl Monday night, setting bail at $100,000 with a 10 percent cash option.<\/p>\n
Allentown police and paramedics were dispatched to the 1300 block of Liberty Street about 3 a.m. Aug. 13 for a report of an unresponsive man. Police said 52-year-old Todd Scholl was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest with a traumatic brain injury, according to a criminal complaint. He died later that day.<\/p>\n
Investigators spoke with a witness, Jerilyn Grate, who reported that Todd Scholl had been beaten about 6 p.m. the day before.<\/p>\n
Grate told police that Todd Scholl had been working on his son\u2019s SUV, when Devon Scholl became angry because his father wouldn\u2019t drive him to Souderton because of a broken taillight, according to court records. That\u2019s when Devon Scholl allegedly began assaulting his father, punching him in the body about six times and four times in the head, according to records.<\/p>\n
Police said the attack took place outside a home in the 700 block of North Eighth Street shared by the father, son and another family member.<\/p>\n
Grate told police that she took the elder Scholl to the Liberty Street home, where he began to complain about head pain. He went to bed about 10 p.m. and was found about 1 a.m. vomiting blood and convulsing, according to records.<\/p>\n
Investigators secured a search warrant for the Scholls’ North Eighth Street home and seized surveillance video from cameras outside the house that recorded the assault.<\/p>\n
Video surveillance allegedly shows Devon Scholl get out of the passenger seat of his SUV and punch Todd Scholl, who was sitting behind the wheel. As the elder Scholl steps out of the vehicle, Devon Scholl allegedly charges and hits his father in the head, knocking him backwards into the SUV.<\/p>\n
Devon Scholl allegedly hits his father several more times, walks away and charges again as Todd Scholl sits in the vehicle. Authorities said the attack lasted about six minutes.<\/p>\n
An autopsy performed on Aug. 15 determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma.<\/p>\n
