PHILADELPHIA, PA \u2014 South Street will burst into music, dancing, and old-world tradition as Brauhaus Schmitz brings back its annual Maifest, turning the block into a full-day celebration of spring.<\/p>\n
Set for Saturday, May 2, the 13th annual Maifest will take over the 700 block of South Street from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., inviting thousands of visitors to experience a lively mix of German culture, food, and family-friendly fun right in the heart of Philadelphia.<\/p>\n
Inspired by the traditional German May Day festival, Maifest celebrates the arrival of spring with a signature centerpiece\u2014a towering Maypole\u2014alongside live music, folk dancing, and a full slate of interactive activities.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur block party has become a cherished tradition for locals and visitors alike,\u201d said Brauhaus Schmitz owner Doug Hager. \u201cCome raise a liter with us under the giant Maypole.\u201d<\/p>\n
Throughout the day, attendees can enjoy performances by Die Heimatklange Band, delivering a mix of classic German oompah music and festive party hits, while the United German Hungarian Dance Group will perform traditional dances around what organizers say is Pennsylvania\u2019s largest Maypole.<\/p>\n
One of the day\u2019s most anticipated events is the Liter Lift Competition at 1 p.m., where participants test their strength by holding a full liter of beer at arm\u2019s length for as long as possible. The annual keg tapping at 1:30 p.m. will officially kick off the festivities.<\/p>\n
Food and drink are central to the celebration, with a menu featuring German favorites such as bratwurst, schnitzel, pretzels, sauerkraut, and a pig roast. Guests can pair their meals with a selection of German beers, including lagers, wheat beers, and pilsners.<\/p>\n
Families will find plenty to enjoy as well, with games, face painting, flower crown-making, and activities designed for all ages.<\/p>\n
