Gas prices have hit their highest level since the start of the Iran war, USA TODAY reports<\/a>, and have jumped to $4.28 per gallon in Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n

The statewide average for gas prices as of April 28 is $4.26, according to AAA<\/a>, up nine cents from the previous day and 17 cents from last week. Nationally, the average gas price rose to $4.18 a gallon on Tuesday, according to AAA data, reaching their highest level since the early days of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022.<\/p>\n

Attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel have roiled oil markets, causing a surge in prices, according to USA TODAY<\/a>. That surge has caused more American to work from home, increasing by 12% increase in a new poll in direct response to gas prices, per USA TODAY<\/a>.<\/p>\n

So where is the cheapest gas in Pennsylvania, and how does Pittsburgh’s prices compare? Here’s what to know.<\/p>\n

Where is the cheapest gas in Pennsylvania? And how does Pittsburgh rank?<\/p>\n

According to the gas prices map from AAA, the cheapest gas can be found in Potter, Cameron, Lycoming, Union, Northumberland, Montour, Columbia, Carbon, Franklin, Adams and York counties, with the average cost as low as $4.04 in Union County.<\/p>\n

The most expensive gas is found in Erie, Crawford, Venango, Warren, Elk, Greene, Blair, Bedford, Mifflin, Perry, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Lackawanna and Pike counties, with the highest price in Crawford at $4.36 per gallon.<\/p>\n

Pittsburgh isn’t the most expensive gas in the state, but it’s on the upper end of the spectrum, with an average price of $4.28 a gallon on April 28. That’s up 12 cents from the day prior and two cents higher than the overall state average.<\/p>\n

The state average for gas in Pennsylvania on April 28 is as follows:<\/p>\n

Regular: $4.263, up from $4.167 on April 27 and $4.090 the previous week.<\/p>\n

Mid-grade: $4.692, up from $4.582 on April 27 and $4.533 the previous week.<\/p>\n

Premium: $5.069, up from $4.965 on April 27 and $4.915 the previous week.<\/p>\n

Diesel: $5.967, down from $5.968 on April 27 and $6.000 the previous week.<\/p>\n

The highest recorded average price for gas in Pennsylvania was $5.071 on June 12, 2022.<\/p>\n

So when will prices drop in Pennsylvania and across the U.S.?<\/p>\n

When asked on April 19 by CNN\u2019s Jake Tapper on\u00a0\u201cState of the Union\u201d<\/a>\u00a0if it\u2019s \u201crealistic\u201d for Americans to expect gas prices to drop below $3, Energy Secretary Chris Wright initially replied “I don’t know,” according to USA TODAY<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But then he said it could happen later this year, or maybe not until 2027. “But prices have likely peaked, and they’ll start going down, certainty with a resolution of this conflict.”<\/p>\n

Why are gas prices so high? Turmoil in oil markets<\/p>\n

The U.S. and Israel launched joint strikes against Iran in February, and in response Iran blocked the Straight of Hormuz, a major oil-trading route, USA TODAY reports. That left hundreds of tankers unable to enter or leave, causing turmoil in the markets.<\/p>\n

The strait has become a key sticking point in\u00a0ongoing negotiations<\/a>\u00a0between the United States and Iran.<\/p>\n
