MAP: Reading homicide investigation

Speaks said he woke up in the middle of the night and went to a local store. When he saw several police cruisers, Speaks said he knew something terrible happened.

“Something gave me a feeling that something was wrong, and I acted on my instincts and found out what it was, the worst,” Speaks said.

District Attorney John Adams called the recent surge in violence alarming, and said it needs to stop.

“Young people don’t seem to understand the value of human life,” Adams said.

Two days before Dominic was killed, Douglas Thorton Jr, 37, was shot in the head in the 100 block of South Sixth Street. He died a short time later. Michael Maldonado-Caballero, 22, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

Last week, Leyla Ponce, 10, was shot at random, said police. The young girl was hit in the legs while riding in her mother’s car in the area of Maple and Muhlenberg streets. Her mother was simply circling the block looking for a parking space.

“I don’t know what the answer is, but we need help,” Adams said. “The community needs to come together, parents need to be involved with their children’s lives, whether they are 15 or 16, or 18 or 19.”

Monday night’s homicide marked the city’s fourth shooting since last Monday.

Adams said most of the victims and people pulling the trigger are young, like Dominic, who had his whole life in front of him.

“He was a good kid,” Speaks said. “I loved him, and he didn’t deserve this. He didn’t deserve this.”

No arrests have been made in Monday night’s homicide. An autopsy is set for Wednesday.

Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to call Crime Alert Berks County at 877-373-9913. A cash reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.

Berks County’s top prosecutor says the violence in Reading needs to stop.
