State of the Town event<\/a> in early April, one speaker asked that a\u00a0proclamation from the council be considered \u201ca safety proclamation, and not an inclusivity proclamation.\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cDo you understand it is a safety thing? I\u2019m here speaking for people who are afraid to come out in public,\u201d added the speaker.<\/p>\n
During the same event, Moore said there have been \u201cno ICE operations in Erie that we are aware of.\u201d<\/p>\n
Erie police do not participate in or assist with civil immigration enforcement and do not share information with ICE regarding \u201cour criminal investigations,\u201d according to Moore, though he added, \u201cat the same time, we cannot interfere with ICE operations in town should they ever take place.\u201d<\/p>\n
Erie Police Chief Lee Mathis said anyone with immigration enforcement concerns should speak with his department.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnyone who is concerned about the police department\u2019s involvement with ICE, or our cooperation with ICE, or operations of ICE in Erie \u2014 please come visit with myself or my deputy chief,\u201d Mathis said at the State of the Town event. \u201cWe will answer all the questions we can. We are very transparent about what goes on in town and what we do and don\u2019t do.\u201d<\/p>\n
