A Delaware County man was sentenced to 39 months in a federal prison this week for his role in a sweeping vehicle theft scheme of everything from cars to backhoes.<\/p>\n
Syheed Goodman, 37, Upper Darby, was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release, pay $939,295 in restitution and pay a special assessment of $2,700 under the sentence handed down by U.S. District Judge Karen S. Marston.<\/p>\n
Co-defendant Tariq Bennett, 31, Philadelphia, was also sentenced to 39 months in prison with three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $502,070 in restitution with a $2,600 special assessment.<\/p>\n
Both men were charged by superseding indictment in 2024 with a third co-conspirator for stealing at least 46 vehicles from businesses in and around Pennsylvania. They pleaded guilty last year to charges including conspiracy, wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and transportation of a stolen vehicle.<\/p>\n
According to the indictment, the trio targeted more than a dozen dealerships and equipment rental companies including those in Upper Darby and Springfield.<\/p>\n
They stole vehicles including tractors and backhoes from car rental companies, car dealerships and home improvement retail stores by presenting fabricated driver\u2019s licenses containing the personal identifying information of third parties, then test-drove, rented, or fraudulently purchased the vehicles.<\/p>\n
The defendants either failed to return the vehicles in the event of a test drive or rental, or failed to make any payments in the event of a fraudulent purchase.<\/p>\n
In the case of fraudulent purchases, the defendants used the personal identifying information of real or concocted people, including Social Security numbers and dates of birth, to obtain financing for the vehicle.<\/p>\n
Those real people whose information was used were unaware of what the defendants were doing and had not given their consent.<\/p>\n
The defendants would sell the stolen vehicles and equipment to other people after stealing them, sometimes going across state lines to do so. The scheme ran from at least October 2021 through October 2023.<\/p>\n
Numerous law enforcement agencies participated in the investigation, including the FBI Philadelphia Organized Crime Task Force and Springfield Township Police Department.<\/p>\n
Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan Claiborne Bisio prosecuted.
