PUNXSUTAWNEY \u2014 If you woke up this morning and heard turkeys gobbling, welcome to spring turkey hunting season in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n
Walt Bingaman, retired National Wild Turkey Federation, was in out area checking out the gobblers for the first day of spring hunting for Jefferson and Clearfield counties before fishing for trout in the rain at Cloe Lake on Friday.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m a retired regional director for the NWTF; I retired two and a half years ago,\u201d Bingaman said, adding that this was one of the areas that he took care of and he lives in Snyder County.<\/p>\n
Bingaman said the hunters are spotty, with the end result that the birds are spotty as well.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re trying to come up with a plan and recently the NWTF and Penn State performed the most detailed hen survival study that has ever taken place,\u201d Bingaman said. \u201cThey rocket trapped hens and placed transmitters on the back of their bodies and if one passed they could try find out if it was a bird that killed it, a mountain lion, or a ground predator.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said they continue to work on it in other states as well.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday, I flushed two hens where I was at today; last weekend I was up in North Cumberland County. We had two youth out and one was able to harvest a mature tom and the other youth missed.\u201d<\/p>\n
