Raymond Wallace still seems surprised to be named doorperson<\/a> of the month. \u201cI\u2019d like to thank the resident who nominated me\u2014I am truly humbled,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Raymond briefly hands the desk over to Terrence, the second doorperson on duty, and leads the way across the marble-filled lobby to the building\u2019s additional doorperson station.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo doorpeople work in tandem on each shift,\u201d he explains. \u201cThat\u2019s why there are two desks.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a rare quiet moment inside the lobby of 55 E. Erie St., a condominium<\/a> tower completed in 2004. \u201cAll the activity tends to erupt at the same time,\u201d Raymond says. \u201cI\u2019m glad there are two of us on duty.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Raymond describes the River North building\u2019s amenities with enthusiasm, saying, \u201cThere\u2019s a super cool pool, gym, and a rentable social lounge.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Raymond previously spent a decade in a similar role at a building in Hyde Park.<\/a> His security company transferred him to 55 E. Erie about a year and a half ago. \u201cI\u2019m lucky to have landed here,\u201d he says. \u201cThe residents here are amazing, generous people.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

His daily responsibilities include logging guests, coordinating with multiple contractors, and conducting foot patrols for security. Package deliveries are handled by the staff of a separate package\u00a0room; however, Raymond and his colleagues assist with grocery drop-offs. \u201cWe call residents when their groceries arrive\u2014or take them up if they ask.\u201d<\/p>\n

Raymond grew up an only child, but now enjoys a large extended family that includes several sisters. For Mother\u2019s Day, he plans to take his mother to church and brunch.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Raymond Wallace is a Cubs fan, but also follows the Chicago Bulls. With speculation swirling about potential coaching changes, he reflects on former Chicago Bull Steve Kerr. \u201cIt\u2019d probably take too much money to get Kerr back to Chicago,\u201d he says, \u201cbut I sure enjoyed watching him play back in the day.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

In his free time, he enjoys \u201cold-school puzzles.\u201d He\u2019s currently working on a 4,000\u2011piece world map. \u201cNo online puzzles, or those numbered pieces they have nowadays,\u201d he says with a laugh.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What he loves most about his job is simple: the people. \u201cThe residents here are so cool,\u201d Raymond says. Judging by his nomination, the feeling is mutual.\u00a0<\/p>\n
