DUBOIS \u2014 In a game that was scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m., but didn\u2019t actually start until much closer to 9 p.m. as the fourth of a rainy four-game day at Showers Field in DuBois on Friday, the Penn State DuBois baseball team took care of business in its first game of the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) championships, winning 9-3 over Penn State Scranton to advance to this weekend\u2019s double-elimination, four-team bracket.<\/p>\n
All of Friday\u2019s games in the 11-team bracket were single-elimination, but Penn State DuBois only had to play one such game, as it earned the top seed in the West this season.<\/p>\n
That meant that PSU-DuBois ace Maclain Welshans \u2014 recently named the 2026 West Division Pitcher of the Year \u2014 toed the rubber against a Scranton team that had won earlier in the day (12-8 over Fayette), and Welshans delivered for DuBois.<\/p>\n
He pitched five shutout innings before Scranton managed to pick up three in the sixth, but Welshans went the distance, allowing just those three runs on three hits and four walks, striking out seven.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the offense put up a four-spot to take the lead for good in the bottom of the second inning, then scored at least one in each of their final four at-bats.<\/p>\n
Cole Bloom led the attack, doubling and singling and driving in three runs, while Braylen Corter had three hits and an RBI and Aaron Miller also doubled and singled. Josh Stout added two hits, and Hayden Vaughn tallied two RBIs.<\/p>\n
DuBois\u2019 four-run second inning was sparked by a Stout walk, and after he stole second, Corter singled him home. After a Miller single, Vaughn plated Corter on a sac fly, then Bloom added an RBI single to push Miller home. The final run came when Alex Gavlock reached on an error, scoring pinch runner Anthony Lopez.<\/p>\n
In the third, Vaughn picked up another RBI on a groundout that scored Corter again, and DuBois added one in the fourth on an RBI single by Lukas Colton to make it 6-0.<\/p>\n
Then, in the fifth, Bloom\u2019s two-run double pushed the lead to eight runs before Scranton cut into that lead with three in the top of the sixth.<\/p>\n
That was the final Scranton run, though, and DuBois added one more insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to a Stout single, followed by an error that allowed Colton to score, setting the 9-3 final.<\/p>\n
Penn State DuBois has a quick turnaround, playing the late game on Friday and the early one today, as first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Stern Field against Penn State Shenango (the third seed from the west).<\/p>\n
