PHILADELPHIA, Miss. (WTOK) – Preparations have begun on the upcoming roundabout construction in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n
The roundabout will connect Highways 15 and 16 at the west end of Beacon Street.<\/p>\n
Crews were out today installing the temporary traffic lights around the area of Beacon Street and the Highway 15 intersection where the roundabout will be built.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a major project that has been underway for some time. We\u2019ve finished all construction activities for phase one, we\u2019re entering phase two of the project next week, we\u2019ll enter that phase. There are some closures coming up. We\u2019re about a quarter of the way through the project and making really good headway,\u201d said Michael Flood with MDOT.<\/p>\n
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Fulton says the new roundabout will improve the traffic flow into the city and continue to stimulate growth in the city.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have four state highways. We have 15, 16, 19, and 21 that go through the city of Philadelphia. Then we\u2019re fortunate that the four-lane going 19 south toward Meridian is getting closer to being finished. Philadelphia\u2019s got a lot of growth, future looks bright, and we want that to continue.\u201d<\/p>\n
MDOT public information officer Michael Flood says drivers should be cautious of several new road closures that will take place next week.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe important thing is just that first day of the closure, which will be Tuesday November 4th. Starting the night before and overnight is when they\u2019re going to implement that closure. We want everyone to keep that in mind, one week from today as you\u2019re driving to work or school, or wherever you\u2019re going, Tuesday November 4th, we\u2019re going to have that closure in place on Highway 16, so you\u2019ll be detouring around it on Highway 15 and 885.\u201d<\/p>\n
The 9 million dollar project is estimated to be completed by late Spring of 2027. <\/p>\n
