It is one of 20 locations in eight states the chain abruptly shuttered.<\/p>\n<p>An employee who answered the phone Tuesday afternoon confirmed the closure, saying employees learned the news Tuesday morning. The restaurant in the Broadcasting Square Shopping Center, 2723 N. Meridian Blvd., had been open Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The restaurant has about 40 employees, the employee said.<\/p>\n<p>The Berks location was among 20 Smokey Bones that closed Tuesday. (DONNA ROVINS \u2013 MEDIANEWS GROUP PHOTO)<\/p>\n<p>Smokey Bones operated in eight states: Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Maryland, Rhode Island, Virginia and New York.<\/p>\n<p>In Pennsylvania, the chain had six locations: one each in Berks and York counties and four in western Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>The restaurant chain is operated by Twin Hospitality Group Inc., a subsidiary of FAT Brands Inc., which issued no release or statements about the closure. Among FAT Brands holdings are Fatburger, Johnny Rockets, Ponderosa, Bonanza, Elevation Burger and Twin Peaks.<\/p>\n<p>FAT Brands purchased the Smokey Bones restaurant chain in September 2023 from Sun Capital Partners Inc. in a transaction valued at $30 million. In January 2025, the chain was then spun off into Twin Hospitality Group Inc., which closed 15 underperforming locations.<\/p>\n<p>In January, FAT Brands and Twin Hospitality Group filed voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"The Smokey Bones restaurant in the Broadcasting Square Shopping Center, Spring Township closed without notice on Tuesday, April 28.
