DELMAR\u00a0\u2014 Being the youngest of three siblings in an athletic family meant Bethlehem baseball catcher Scott Hutton had to do things last.<\/p>\n

Considering what his older brother and sister accomplished before him, Hutton entered his second varsity baseball campaign with the Eagles this spring, looking to establish his own path to success.<\/p>\n

So far, the sophomore has accomplished that task in spectacular fashion.<\/p>\n

Not only has Scott Hutton excelled as a defender and leader, he’s also been Bethlehem\u2019s best offensive player. The sophomore is a budding star in the Suburban Council and is making area fans take note of another stellar athlete from the\u00a0Hutton family.<\/p>\n

Older brother Ray\u00a0Hutton attended La Salle Institute and advanced to the Division 2 state wrestling final in 2022 at 171 pounds.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, older sister Claire Hutton<\/a> starred on both the girls’<\/a> and boys’ soccer<\/a> teams at Bethlehem and now plays for Bay FC<\/a> of the National Women\u2019s Soccer League. The 20-year-old midfielder signed at age 17<\/a> with the Kansas City Current and has become a mainstay<\/a> with the U.S. Women\u2019s National Team over the past year<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Naturally, having family members so athletically accomplished heightened Scott\u00a0Hutton\u2019s desire to make a name for himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cI see myself as my own person. I am trying to build my own stature, instead of living in hers,\u201d Scott\u00a0Hutton said of his sister. \u201cShe is obviously a great athlete and has helped me a lot from an athletic standpoint.\u00a0It is pretty cool to see what she has achieved.\u00a0It gives me a good idea of where to strive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bethlehem baseball coach Matt\u00a0Rehbit has watched Scott Hutton flourish in his second season with the varsity squad. He believes the sophomore has found his own identity.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast year, I think he put much more pressure on himself being the freshman on the varsity and, of course, we have (press) clippings all over the school on his sister,\u201d Rehbit said. \u201cWe have had these talks. He also has a brother who was a successful wrestler and now is a bodybuilder. I have told him, ‘Just be you, let things come to you naturally and have a smile out there.’ He has done all of that this year and his numbers have exploded.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scott Hutton’s success has been a joy for his siblings to watch.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it is really cool for me that he is making his own footsteps, creating his own path and doing it in something he loves and enjoys,\u201d Claire Hutton said. \u201cFor me to be able to come home every time or talk to him over the phone and see how much he has grown and how he has such a good head on his shoulders makes me so happy and proud of him\u00a0\u2014 even if I don\u2019t say it to him enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am so proud of him. He\u2019s been doing awesome,\u201d said Ray Hutton, who is a senior attending Washington & Lee University in Virginia. \u201cI think he is very good at managing the mental game. He probably feels a lot of pressure from my sister and me, but I hope he knows we just want him to be happy. He is very good at controlling how he is doing, amazing that he has been put in such a leadership role so early and I think he is mature enough for it. I think it is something he definitely can handle.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bethlehem sits at 7-7-1 overall and 5-5 in the Suburban Council. When the Eagles beat Burnt\u00a0Hills-Ballston Lake 8-3 on Wednesday, Scott Hutton finished 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. When the Eagles defeated Shaker 7-6 in 10 innings, the lefty-hitting\u00a0sophomore clubbed a solo home run to right in the last inning to help secure the win. Hutton also delivered a walk-off win with a two-run single in a 3-2 victory over Columbia.<\/p>\n

\u201cClaire Hutton, to this day, is one of the kindest and most\u00a0humble people<\/a> you will ever have met. Scott is very similar,\u201d Rehbit said. \u201cHe is grounded and a team guy. He is an extremely hard worker, and he\u2019s been our best offensive player this year. He leads us in everything.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou would never know he is a 10th grader. He is so mature. He is great not only at calling the game but also at dealing with the pitching staff. I think that is the part of the game he enjoys the most, the cerebral part of things, as the catcher running the show. He definitely thrives in that role. He has saved so many runs by working so hard, and everybody knows it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scott Hutton said his experience from last season has paid major dividends this season.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlaying last year helped me a lot,\u201d Scott Hutton said. \u201cI learned so much from the seniors and from the returners this year. It has been awesome to talk to them.\u201d<\/p>\n

While he’s already become a leader in the Bethlehem dugout, Hutton is convinced he still has a long way to go.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think I have gotten where I want to be. There is still a lot more work to do,\u201d he\u00a0said. \u201cFrom a personal perspective, I think I can do more, and as a team, I definitely think we can do more.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scott Hutton chats with his sister weekly. He finds their conversations helpful as he navigates his way through playing in one of the best baseball leagues in the state. Claire Hutton, who plays on the road on Sunday against San Diego Wave FC, is thrilled to help her younger brother find his athletic path.<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, we don\u2019t talk about soccer much at all,\u201d Claire Hutton said. \u201cThat is such a huge part of my family and what my parents (Brett and Jennifer) have fostered within the three of us. It is our lives and we get to choose what we want to do. No matter what we did in life, they would be proud and happy of us. I think we look at each other and keep that in the back of our heads that no matter what we wanted to do, like if Scott wanted to go D1 baseball and eventually the major leagues, that is amazing. If he wanted to turn around and work a 9-to-5 desk job, that would be amazing too. The biggest thing is being a good person first.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will never be a competition. Our big competition is family board games. We will always be each other\u2019s biggest cheerleaders through it all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rehbit has moved Scott Hutton around in the batting order, having him hit first, second or third to best utilize his talents. The Eagles’ coach characterized the sophomore as a cornerstone piece to his program. The team\u2019s standout catcher is excited about Bethlehem\u2019s chances for the postseason and, despite his own level of achievement to this point, has reveled in the day-to-day grind and camaraderie spent with teammates.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just find baseball fun. When I was in Little League, I could always play baseball with a smile. I still can,\u201d Scott Hutton said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has a good group of friends. He is such a natural leader,\u201d Claire Hutton said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite being based on the West Coast, Claire Hutton still follows her younger brother’s games via the GameChanger app and gets updates from her parents. She is thrilled with his progress in establishing his own athletic legacy.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a whole journey,\u201d Claire Hutton said. \u201cHe hears my name and Ray\u2019s name a ton. That doesn\u2019t define who he is at all. He never has to feel the pressure because he is his own person. He is going to do great things and there never needs to be a comparison. I have talked to him about it a ton. Sometimes he gets annoyed when they turn into lectures. I think it’s just me reminding him that it is his life and his journey. He gets to choose how he wants to go about it and if he wants help in any way and wants to listen, I am there for him to talk.<\/p>\n
