HELLERTOWN, Pa. – Habitat for Humanity held its biggest fundraiser of the year Monday in Northampton County.<\/p>\n
The money goes towards projects designed to help single moms.<\/p>\n
Statistics show that 60 percent of renters are getting by on less than $50,000 a year.<\/p>\n
It’s an annual rite of spring, at Dimmick Park in Hellertown.<\/p>\n
Habitat for Humanity is gearing up to raise more than $150,000, through their all-female competition called, “She Nailed It”.<\/p>\n
“In 2021, 82 percent of our homeowners were single mothers,” said Gina Loiacono of Lehigh Valley Habitat for Humanity.<\/p>\n
The competition brings together teams of four, with creative team names like, the Power Hitters, the Nail Biters, and the Splinter Sisters.<\/p>\n
The Stud Finders took up the challenge. Team Captain Rayven King-Gray is nicknamed \u201cThe Hammer”.<\/p>\n
“It’s important for me to be part of this. I grew up in construction, my parents are contractors,” said King-Gray.<\/p>\n
Forty-five teams of four women must pound four nails into a board in the shortest time possible to advance to the next round.<\/p>\n
“Oh, we practiced every week! Every week we could,” explained King-Gray. “We took an hour or two, got our reps down, our movements, and made sure we came out here to rock it today.”<\/p>\n
One in 8 households spend half or more of their income on housing. Habitat for Humanity is here to help.<\/p>\n
“Right now, disproportionately, the path to home ownership and the various obstacles, affect single mothers more than any other field right now,” said Loiacono.<\/p>\n
