Hundreds of students came together to learn more about the Holocaust and listen as survivors told their stories.<\/p>\n
SCRANTON, Pa. \u2014 Hundreds can be heard clapping inside the conference room at the Hilton in downtown Scranton, as survivors of the Holocaust tell their stories of one of modern history\u2019s largest genocides.<\/p>\n
“The second and third generations passing on their relatives’ stories is a really cool experience,” said Jake Costanzo of Dunmore Junior\/Senior High School<\/p>\n
The 38th annual Teen Symposium on the Holocaust brings together hundreds of high school students from across northeastern Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n
Displays fill the lobby area, highlighting the death toll and showing the atrocities, as well as the journey back after liberation.<\/p>\n
“For 30 years, as I said in the beginning, I didn\u2019t speak about it until I found something that said the concentration camps didn\u2019t exist. That\u2019s when I decided it was time, but it was very hard at first,” said Maud Dahme, a Holocaust Survivor.<\/p>\n
Maud Dahme lives in New Jersey today, but growing up, she was taken from her home and sent to live in the Netherlands, away from her family, who were captured by the Germans.<\/p>\n
“I was only six years old, my sister four, to be separated from your parents and being told that you\u2019re going on the farm for a vacation. Well, my parents said they were going on their vacation somewhere else, and they would come by and pick us up again. Three years passed, and we didn\u2019t even recognize our parents after the war.”<\/p>\n
A story that, decades later, she is still proud to tell, and one that students are eager to listen to.<\/p>\n
“Even though how terribly a wide group of people were treated, a lot of people also did come together to try and help each other during those hard times,” said Holy Rosary student Farrah Talarico.<\/p>\n
