An 18-year-old Collingdale man is facing charges after a former Swarthmore College professor was killed while riding his bike<\/a> in Upper Darby Township, Delaware County.<\/p>\n

Police issued an arrest warrant for Kai Poole on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Poole is facing DUI, careless driving, among other charges in the death of 39-year-old Eduard “Teddy” Einstein, the district attorney’s office announced.<\/p>\n

“It just adds to the sadness and the feeling of loss,” said Pat Devlin, a professor at Swarthmore College.<\/p>\n

According to police, Einstein was struck by a car Poole was driving near West Providence Road and East Penn Pines Boulevard in December 2025.<\/p>\n

Officials say Poole, who only had a learner’s permit at the time of the crash, was allegedly driving the vehicle alone, while under the influence of marijuana.<\/p>\n

“It’s very clear that the individual driving was under the influence of marijuana and this was an accident that could have been prevented,” said Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse.<\/p>\n

Investigators say Poole did not properly yield while making a left turn, striking Einstein.<\/p>\n

Einstein was in the bike lane with all his safety gear on when he was struck, police say.<\/p>\n

Einstein’s loved ones have since pushed for safety improvements along the stretch of Providence Road where the crash happened. They say PennDOT has committed to installing trafficcalming measures.<\/p>\n

“Using paint and plastic post, hopefully making the improvements will see them this summer,” said Jacob Russell, also a professor at Swarthmore College.<\/p>\n

Colleagues remember Einstein for not only his intellect, but heart.<\/p>\n

“He was really excited to do home improvement projects. He was a dedicated father. He was a loving guy. He will be missed by family but also friends,” Devlin.<\/p>\n

Friends say they are in the process of publishing one of Einstein’s final works and plan to hold a celebration of life next month.<\/p>\n
