ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) said Muhlenberg’s $10 million budget deficit means people will lose their jobs as the college looks for ways to reduce costs.<\/p>\n
The AAUP said while it cannot prevent or dictate layoffs, it can point out the inequity of how these layoffs occur.<\/p>\n
According to AAUP, “Faculty will be given the grace to teach for another year, with the ability to settle their affairs within their departments, find suitable next employment and the chance to say goodbye to colleagues and students.”<\/p>\n
The AAUP said the staff has not been given the same opportunity in the past.<\/p>\n
According to the AAUP, employees who lost jobs in the past were told to clear out their office within hours and escorted off campus.<\/p>\n
It said that means they were not given the chance to forward emails or files from their desktop or to say goodbye.<\/p>\n
AAUP is asking that any staff laid off be given a 90-day notice and 90 days of salary and benefits.<\/p>\n
According to the letter, other colleges have done that, and it feels like the minimum requirement to show respect to all members of the community.<\/p>\n
