A startup ecosystem is only as strong as the people who feed it. That\u2019s the common thread connecting three founders building very different companies in Philadelphia.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Just like with an environmental ecosystem, they said, there must be exchange: entrepreneurs take what they need to build, then send something useful back. In practice, that can be a challenge, especially when funding is scarce and survival is the priority.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That includes Milestone Makers, a free program for high-growth startups run by the Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center<\/a> (NEC), a nonprofit entrepreneurship support organization focused on access, education and mentorship.<\/p>\n Another free NEC program available to Philly entrepreneurs is called Milestone Circles. It\u2019s designed for small-to-medium businesses, and that\u2019s the one both Kiran Bandyopadhyay of food marketplace MealGenie<\/a> and Connie Boswell of Guiding God\u2019s Property<\/a>, which organizes HBCU tours for students who might never otherwise consider the path, both tapped into.\u00a0<\/p>\n As federal funding tightens<\/a> and venture capital grows more cautious<\/a>, all three of these entrepreneurs point to that kind of startup infrastructure<\/a> as key.<\/p>\n By providing access to peer networks, mentorship, early customer relationships and local support organizations, they say, it helps them keep building when capital is harder to access.<\/p>\n What the ecosystem actually gives founders: Partners, access, customers and support\u00a0<\/p>\n Mastromatto made it clear that the most useful thing Philadelphia has given Rego is other entrepreneurs who are navigating similar ups and downs.<\/p>\n That matters more than it might sound, because Rego, which uses AI to help multifamily buildings divert waste from landfills, doesn\u2019t do much work in Philadelphia.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWhile our company is headquartered here, most of our work is in other cities, which presents unique challenges and opportunities,\u201d Mastromatto said. Finding founders who\u2019ve figured out how to grow beyond their home base without losing the benefits of being rooted there is one of the values of the network.<\/p>\n Bandyopadhyay needed something more operational. When she was building MealGenie \u2014 an app that lets restaurants create personalized meals from ingredients they already have \u2014 she needed kitchens willing to test a platform that didn\u2019t exist yet. Saffron Indian Kitchen and Founding Farmers showed up early, running live orders and giving feedback that shaped how the product works. Tiny Screen Labs<\/a>, a local dev shop, built it.\u00a0<\/p>\n Philadelphia, she found, has a useful combination of chefs who care about fresh ingredients and customers open to trying something new, plus enough proximity to New York to tap investors and AI talent when she needs them.<\/p>\n Boswell\u2019s version of ecosystem support looks different. She built Guiding God\u2019s Property, which takes middle and high school students from across the Philadelphia tri-state area on HBCU tours, largely through community relationships and social media. Institutional backing has been slow to follow.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI have a huge social media presence,\u201d she said, \u201cbut it only produced a few individuals and small organizations\u2019 support.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n What they give back: Business boosts, mentorship and community good<\/p>\n The return side of the exchange is just as varied.<\/p>\n Bandyopadhyay\u2019s give-back is the business itself. MealGenie is designed so that restaurants make more money, drivers and kitchen staff get more work and customers get meals that are tailored to them rather than picked off a static menu. She\u2019s hired locally, run beta tests with Philadelphia families and built a base of early users who help shape where the platform goes next.\u00a0<\/p>\n Working closely with those users and frequently hearing about housing affordability led her to a second venture: a marketplace connecting people with credit unions, housing authorities and modular housing providers to make homeownership more reachable.\u00a0<\/p>\n For Mastromatto, giving back includes mentorship. He\u2019s been through Techstars, Gener8tor and the Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center, and has experienced both the wins and the tough stretches. Now he shows up for first-time founders for honest conversations about what actually happens when you\u2019re trying to build something.\u00a0<\/p>\n Boswell\u2019s version is simpler to explain and harder to measure. Guiding God\u2019s Property takes students to HBCU campuses that might not have felt like real options before. The payoff may take years. \u201cPerhaps those who enroll in a STEM major,\u201d Boswell said, \u201cwill address an eco-friendly need.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n For these three entrepreneurs, their city is a combination testing ground, source of relationships and place where the value they create can circulate back.<\/p>\n For Bandyopadhyay, that means building in Philly without treating the city only as a launchpad.<\/p>\n \u201cOverall,\u201d Bandyopadhyay said, \u201cmy focus is on building solutions within Philadelphia that create practical, lasting value for the community.\u201d<\/p>\n
