Erie man hit by car on East Sixth Street in December dies of injuries<\/p>\n

An Erie man who was hit by a car <\/a>in the city in early December has died of his injuries, according to the Erie County Coroner’s Office.<\/p>\n

Jonathan Johnson, 51, died May 6 at 6:18 a.m. at UPMC Hamot, Coroner Lyell Cook said.<\/p>\n

Johnson was injured on the early evening of Dec. 8 when he was hit by a Volkswagen in the area of East Sixth and Perry streets. According to Erie police, the Volkswagen was traveling east on East Sixth Street when it struck Johnson, whom police said was walking across East Sixth Street but was not in a crosswalk.<\/p>\n

An Erie police accident investigator said May 6 his probe of the accident revealed that Johnson was jaywalking and was wearing dark clothing. A witness told police the pedestrian was in the roadway when he was hit, police reported following the accident.<\/p>\n

Johnson suffered a severe leg injury in the accident and was taken by EmergyCare to UPMC Hamot, police reported at the time. The 56-year-old man who was driving the Volkswagen stopped after the accident, and his vehicle was towed from the scene, according to police.<\/p>\n

The driver was charged in January with a summary count of careless driving-serious bodily injury. The charge was later changed to a summary count of careless driving, and the driver pleaded guilty to it in late February and was ordered to pay a fine and court costs, according to court records.<\/p>\n
