On Saturday,\u00a0May 16, Performance Music at The University of Scranton<\/a> will present a recital by critically and popularly acclaimed pianist\u00a0and Northeastern Pennsylvania native John Wilson.\u00a0The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Houlihan-McLean Center, Mulberry Street and Jefferson Avenue, downtown Scranton.\u00a0Admission is\u00a0free\u00a0and the concert is open to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-seated basis.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is always a\u00a0special\u00a0pleasure\u00a0to\u00a0extend a warm welcome home to a\u00a0world-renowned\u00a0musician\u00a0like\u00a0John, who grew up in our area,\u201d says Performance Music\u00a0Executive Director, Janelle Decker.<\/p>\n

A native of the\u00a0Mid\u00a0Valley area near Scranton,\u00a0Wilson serves as\u00a0orchestral\u00a0pianist for the San Francisco Symphony;\u00a0principal\u00a0keyboard for the Marin Symphony, San Diego Symphony and Oakland Symphony; and\u00a0is critically and popularly acclaimed for his extraordinary artistry and commanding presence. Last season cemented his reputation as a defining voice in American solo piano, beginning with a sold-out Carnegie Hall recital.\u00a0In addition to his near-constant orchestral work, he performed solo concerti with San Francisco Philharmonic, Marin Symphony and Merced Symphony. He teaches at San\u202fFrancisco Conservatory.\u00a0His recording of Gershwin transcriptions by\u202fEarl\u202fWild surpassed 1 million streams in its first year. He appears on two\u00a0GRAMMY\u2011winning\u00a0recordings with San Francisco Symphony and on \u201cGRACE: The Music of Michael\u202fTilson\u202fThomas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wilson has performed with violinist Joshua\u202fBell; cellist Johannes\u202fMoser; and iconic vocalists Frederica\u202fvon\u202fStade, Sasha\u202fCooke and Michael\u202fFeinstein; played on international tours with the San\u202fFrancisco Symphony under Michael\u202fTilson\u202fThomas and Esa-Pekka Salonen; and made guest appearances with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. A passionate advocate for\u00a0new music, he has premiered works by Michael\u202fTilson\u202fThomas, John\u202fAdams, Steve\u202fReich, Timo\u202fAndres and Gabriela\u202fLena Frank.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wilson\u2019s\u00a0outstanding\u00a0performances and artistry have\u00a0garnered\u00a0widespread recognition and critical acclaim both domestically and internationally,\u00a0earning him\u00a0First Prize at the 2019 International Respighi Prize, the 2021 American Competition and the 2023 Ernst Bacon Memorial Award\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the latter honoring exemplary performances of American music.\u00a0Earlier milestones include a last-minute triumph in Beethoven\u2019s\u00a0Triple Concerto\u00a0at the Sun Valley Music Festival\u00a0\u2014\u00a0praised as \u201cbreathtakingly assured\u201d by\u00a0Idaho Press\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and a standout performance of Mozart\u2019s K. 491 at the 50th Anniversary Midsummer Mozart Festival.<\/p>\n
