\u00a0Etzel prelim waived, charges updated, family speaks out\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\nMy Mother\u2019s Delicacies is one of many small businesses in the area, with this week being National Small Business Week. Experts say that for every dollar spent at local businesses, 73 cents stays in the community, benefiting others.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s more of a churn, we call that the multiplier effect. When you are spending those dollars locally, it isn\u2019t just those 73 dollars. It\u2019s your neighbors who are then going to use those checks to buy from another small business.\u00a0So, it has a ripple effect and a bigger impact on the economy,\u201d said President of the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce, Bob Durkin.<\/p>\n
According to the\u00a0U.S. Small Business Administration, almost half of all Americans work for small businesses, becoming fixtures within their communities. Durkin says it\u2019s another way money stays at home.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, because it is the small business that tend to be homegrown. So, it\u2019s local people, local businesses, local operations, they are hiring and employing individuals from northeastern PA,\u201d said Durkin.<\/p>\n
With thousands of small businesses within Scranton alone, it\u2019s these true local shops that help boost local economies and keep money right at home.<\/p>\n
Romano says that to be a small business is to have an active relationship with customers and to have pride in where you\u2019re from.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe represent the community, and the community represents us. So, we give, and they give back. It\u2019s a give and take,\u201d said Romano.<\/p>\n
