<\/p>\n
A statewide initiative is working to highlight the lived experiences of Black Pennsylvanians. This project, Voices of History premieres on May 14 at 6 p.m. in the Erie Art Museum.<\/p>\n
The premier will feature an exclusive screening and conversation with Pulitzer Prize Winner, Dr. Edda Fields-Black, author of COMBEE: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee River Raid, and Black Freedom during the Civil War.<\/p>\n
This initiative is one of the first of its kind in a statewide effort to collect and celebrate stories, family history, struggles, and triumphs of Black Pennsylvanians throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.<\/p>\n
Launched in 2024, the initiative has brought light to the voices of people whose contributions during their lifetime have shaped history.<\/p>\n
The installment at the Erie Art Museum was created in a partnership with Erie\u2019s Black Wall Street and Morgan Moody the film producer who worked on the Voices of History projects in Pittsburgh and Scranton. Terrell Robinson provided creative direction as well.<\/p>\n
The Voices of History Erie production brought together community story circles from the Historical Institute of Culture & the African American Experience (HICAAE).<\/p>\n
Community members shared stories and memories of family, work, migration, and neighborhood life that were professionally recorded ensuring they are accessible for future generations to come.<\/p>\n
The installment will feature eight recorded stories that will be shared as short films combining testimonials and photographs.<\/p>\n
The audience will be able to engage with the storytellers, filmmakers, and PA Humanities staff about the stories and the creation process.<\/p>\n
Funding was made possible by Erie Insurance, Thomas B. Hagen, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s PA Arts and Culture Recovery Program, and the Pennsylvania Department of Education Job Training and Education Programs Grant.<\/p>\n
The Voices of History Erie videos will be available online here following the event.<\/p>\n
Select participants were professionally recorded, with their stories preserved in a permanent digital archive, ensuring that they remain accessible to future generations.<\/p>\n
The May 14 screening at the Erie Art Museum will feature a first look at 8 recorded oral stories, presented as short films that combine powerful personal testimonies with photographs from participants\u2019 own lives. Following the screening, audiences will be invited to engage directly with storytellers, filmmakers, and PA Humanities staff in a conversation about the stories and the process of bringing them to the screen.<\/p>\n
