Reading Standard Motorsports<\/a> in Exeter Township, a company his dad started in the 1960s.<\/p>\nHe says spring is their busy season and during May, which is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, it spotlights their favorite topic.<\/p>\n
\u201cMotorcycles aren\u2019t about speed, yes they\u2019re quick but it really comes down to the safety aspect more than anything,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Before the ride begins, Miller says they encourage motorcyclists to wear safety gear. That includes long pants, long shirts, boots, and a helmet.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf a helmet doesn\u2019t fit you properly, you\u2019re not going to want to wear the helmet so that\u2019s very important and it\u2019s not going to do its job either,\u201d Miller said.<\/p>\n
Bike enthusiasts like Miller\u2019s wife, Pam Smart, love the ride for many reasons.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe adventure, the excitement, the beauty,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
But she sees other things, such as distracted driving.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll the time, people are on their cellphones not paying attention. I\u2019m always looking out for cars switching lanes and cutting us off,\u201d Smart said.<\/p>\n
In addition to other vehicles, motorcyclists also deal with hazards such as pebbles and potholes.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt doesn\u2019t take much. Hot tar during the summer, another safety thing you have to be very aware of,\u201d Miller explained.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s why they say it doesn\u2019t hurt to utilize PA\u2019s free safety course.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t have to buy a motorcycle, you can go through that course and learn how to ride and it kind of tells you, \u2018Is it really something that I want to do?\u2019\u201d said Miller.<\/p>\n
But in the end, it all comes down to making it home.<\/p>\n
\u201cEnjoy the ride, stay safe,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
