A man who was accused of orchestrating a fraudulent voter
\nregistration scheme in Pennsylvania ahead of the 2024 presidential
\nelection has pleaded guilty.<\/p>\n

In October 2024, district attorneys in
\nmultiple counties announced<\/a> they had received thousands of
\nvoter registration applications that did not appear to be
\nlegitimate. The announcements made national news, and the incidents
\nwere eventually turned over to state Attorney General Dave Sunday
\nfor prosecution.<\/p>\n

Guillermo Sainz, who was in charge of the operation, pleaded
\nguilty Monday to three misdemeanor counts of soliciting voter
\nregistrations and will face 30 days in jail, along with a $1,000
\nfine and 11 months probation.<\/p>\n

Sainz was an organizer for the Arizona-based campaign firm
\nField+Media Corps, which conducted voter registration drives in
\nPennsylvania ahead of the 2024 election.
\nAccording to criminal complaints<\/a> filed against Sainz and six
\nstreet canvassers, canvassers were paid based on how many
\nregistration forms they submitted. That\u2019s illegal in
\nPennsylvania.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Office of Attorney General determined that the crimes were
\nnot motivated by efforts to sway any election or voter rolls for
\nany specific party or candidate,\u201d Sunday\u2019s office
\nsaid in a statement<\/a>. \u201cRather, the charged defendants were
\nmotivated to maintain employment and income by reaching
\nquotas.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to affidavits in the case, one canvasser who was
\neventually fired for not meeting her quota told investigators that,
\non some days, she would \u201cmake up names and information to meet the
\nquota, due to fear of losing her job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Local election officials in Berks, Lancaster, and York counties
\nstarted taking note of the defective forms and referring them to
\nlaw enforcement. According to county officials, none of the
\nsuspicious applications ever led to someone getting fraudulently
\nregistered. Nevertheless,
\nnow-President Donald Trump referenced the scheme<\/a> during his
\n2024 campaign, falsely claiming fake ballots had been found in
\nPennsylvania.<\/p>\n

Charges against the six canvassers, some of whom face felony
\ncounts of tampering with public records, are still pending.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for the attorney general\u2019s office did not
\nimmediately respond to a request for an update on those cases.<\/p>\n
