BUTLER TWP., LUZERNE CO. — A Luzerne County man is facing charges after police say he took a handgun from a home in the Beech Mountain Lakes community early Saturday morning.

According to Butler Township Police, the incident happened shortly after 2 a.m. at an apartment on Trapper Springs Lane, where a group of people had gathered.

Investigators say one of the people inside the home reported that 21-year-old Gary J. Mitchell, of Jenkins Township, took a Glock 43X handgun and ran from the apartment. Someone at the gathering tried to follow him but lost sight of him near the intersection of Four Seasons Drive and Trapper Springs Lane.

Police began searching the area, and a Freeland officer later found Mitchell at the Beech Mountain Lakes guard station. Authorities say he was trying to leave the area using a ride-sharing service when he was taken into custody. The handgun was recovered.

Mitchell has been charged with felony counts of theft and receiving stolen property. He was arraigned and released on $20,000 unsecured bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for later this month.
