\n\t\t\t\t\t\tSerpentine Drive opened roughly 100 years ago to funnel traffic through Schenley Park while allowing park users to enjoy the trails.It was closed to vehicular traffic several years ago for road repairs and a collapsed wall, and has remained closed.However, the Squirrel Hill Historical Society launched a petition drive to formally request a public hearing in efforts to have Serpentine Drive reopen to vehicular traffic. “We’ve had policemen and park rangers tell us that emergency response time is delayed by having this road closed, and they have to take these detours,” said Helen Wilson, vice president of the Squirrel Hill Historical Society.If a public hearing is held, there will likely be many in support of keeping the roadway closed to vehicular traffic.It sits in City Council District 5, represented by Barb Warwick.”What’s the value of being able to zip up here versus going Beacon to Wightman versus the value of having this space where you can bike up, walk your dog, and be safe because there’s no halfway solution,” Wilson said.
