MAXATAWNY TWP., Pa. – Another roundabout is coming to Route 222.<\/p>\n
“We just started a new phase of the project and that involves the closing of Long Lane between U.S. 222 and Topton Road. Local access will be maintained but thru traffic will be detoured utilizing 222 and Topton Road,” said Sean Brown, a PennDOT spokesperson. “This is to be able to work on Long Lane in this area to tie in with the new roundabout.”<\/p>\n
Road work continues at the Intersection of Route 222 and Long Lane in Maxatawny Township. They’re getting rid of the red lights and replacing them with another roundabout, a common move along Route 222 as a new phase of this project gets underway.<\/p>\n
“Also with this project is really moving traffic through the corridor,” Brown said. “We’ve seen improvements at the one we constructed at 222 and 662 and many other intersections throughout 222.”<\/p>\n
What should you be aware of when driving through this area for the next couple of months? Daytime and nighttime restrictions and detours. Turning will also be restricted.<\/p>\n
Route 222 is a busy road that sends drivers and trucks through Berks, Lehigh and beyond. PennDOT says previous roundabouts continue to help lower congestion and backups and keep people safe.<\/p>\n
“These have been proven to be safer than signalized intersections. While they still do have crashes, they have minor crashes, fender benders,” Brown said. “We’re eliminating the major injury and fatal crashes with the roundabouts.
