\u00a0Millcreek Township creates new position to expand public outreach\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n\u201cWe must think twice when we start looking at our routes and adding new routes and increasing our capacity, which is something that we\u2019re working on right now,\u201d Jennifer Hoffman, the executive director for Meals on Wheels Erie, said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Second Harvest Food Bank said gas prices affect everything from transporting food donations to delivering supplies throughout the region.<\/p>\n
Demand for services from both nonprofits has remained steady or even increased, as some families can no longer afford to drive.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur CDL trucking, our local trucking, obviously, those prices have increased significantly for us. So, it is putting that additional strain, additional expense on our delivery side,\u201d Greg Hall, the CEO for Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania, said.<\/p>\n
Both organizations said they are feeling the effects at the pump. For Meals on Wheels\u2019 case, it\u2019s the volunteers who said they have to spend more money out of pocket to deliver their routes. Meanwhile, Second Harvest said they\u2019re not seeing families come in as much.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs fuel prices continue to rise, folks have to make the tough choices about do you know, do I pay my food bill? Do I purchase food? So unfortunately, it\u2019s impacting both sides of what we do,\u201d Hall said.<\/p>\n
Both organizations said nobody has yet been turned down as a result of rising prices, and operations are still running as normal.<\/p>\n
