Training is hard, but it helps me get to where I want to be, and I am extremely thankful for all of that.”

She is a product of Elk Lake’s highly successful distance running program that has thrived under the tutelage of coach Will Squier and his assistant, Marc Weisgold, Kendyl’s father.

She went stride for stride with Montrose’s Avery Kerr in the 1,600 for each of the four laps. The fierce battle came right down to the final meters, with Weisgold’s late thrust pushing her ahead in 5 minutes and 7.50 seconds. Kerr clocked in at 5:07.62, and the two can pick up where they left off at the PIAA Championships next weekend.

“I felt really good,” Weisgold said. “Avery really pushed me to get that amazing time. We were sprinting.”

In the 800, Weisgold found herself in fourth place heading into the final turn. She again used a sprint down the home stretch to win in 2:21.29. She then tumbled to the ground, exhausted by her effort.

Holy Cross gold

Holy Cross senior Kevin Vincent three-peated in the Class 2A boys triple jump.

A state-medal winner last season, Vincent launched himself 44 feet, 6 inches for the gold. Mountain View’s Jacob Ficcaro was second (43-6) and Dunmore’s Josh Dudick was third (43-0).

“To get a third one feels good,” Vincent said. “I was a little nervous because the competition is so tough. It wasn’t my best set, but to come out with a gold medal and hopefully have put myself in a good place for next week at states is just phenomenal.”

All season, Branden Fadl kept putting the shot farther and farther at each meet, re-establishing his school record along the way.

He muscled one out to 54-2 to win the gold medal and smash his record of 53-8.

“I am pretty happy, but I can always do better,” Fadl said. “I started all the way from November. I critique myself a lot. I am in the weight room but really focused on technique.”

State-bound

After a junior season that fell short of expectations and adversity, Western Wayne’s Robert Carrelle made the most of his final District 2 meet.

The senior cleared 14-0 to win the pole vault, an event that he finished fifth in with a clearance of 11-0 in 2024.

The consummate teammate, Carrelle, was overwhelmed that he and Nick Fisichella, Sebastian Figueroa and Antonio Fisichella qualified for the state meet with their fourth-place finishing time of 3:29.59 in the 1,600 relay.

“States is going to be super fun,” Carrelle said. “This was a great meet. It was so fun. I am excited about going to states with my teammates in the relay, too.”

Hornets shine

A pair of Honesdale athletes picked the right time to have their best performances.

Senior Olivia Wood had a career-best mark of 101-1 in the discus. At the District 2 Class 3A Championships, she launched a throw of 115-11 to finish ahead of Wallenpaupack’s Nada Blume (112-8).

“I put in a lot of work and received a lot of support from my coaches and teammates,” Wood said. “I was worried about my throw, because I had been in second for a while. When they called the measurement, I was in awe because it is more than 10 feet better than what I came in with.”

Maddox Johnson set his sights on the medal stand in the preseason. He cleared 6-0 at the Walter Godek Twilight Invitational and again at the Robert Spagna Championships. At the District 2 meet, he leaped 6-3 to win the gold with fewer misses over Dallas’ Hunter Pitcavage, who also cleared 6-3.

“I am so happy, because last year, I really wanted to go to states and didn’t,” Johnson said. “I made it happen. At the first meet, I started off with 5-10 and progressed all season. You have to believe you can do this.”

Quick hits

Montrose repeated as the champion in the Class 2A 400 relay. Carl Nolt, Nico Christian and Max Kuwaye ran on both teams, while the group added Gabriele Blasi this season.

“We didn’t know if we were going to be able to have a relay team,” Kuwaye said. “Then, we got Gabriele in there, and he helped us out a lot. I feel good.”

Scranton senior Anijha Turner and Wallenpaupack’s June Brown added district gold to their wins at the Spagna Championship meet.

Turner, running for the final time on her home track, seized control of the 400 and finished in 58.08.

“I feel like today I was really pushed,” Turner said. “This is my first year running the 400. I can’t believe any of this. I can’t even process that I am going to states.”

Brown also jumped out to a big lead on the first of her two laps in the 800. She established an insurmountable advantage and ran a personal-best time of 2:17.62.

“It’s been an amazing season,” Brown said. “Going into that last 200, I just gave it all that I had. I knew that I could win it, and that is what made me go. I was so surprised with a 2:17; it’s the best.”

SCRANTON — Kendyl Weisgold is willing to leave it all out on the track in pursuit of victory.…

[15
305,178,180,179,726
post-190876","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-scranton","tag-high-school-sports","tag-scranton","tag-scranton-headlines","tag-scranton-news","tag-sports
["GET
