Daryl Morey\u2019s stint running the Sixers\u2019 front office is over.<\/p>\n
Morey is out as the team’s president of basketball operations, the Sixers announced Tuesday night. Morey had held that title since the fall of 2020.<\/p>\n
ESPN\u2019s Shams Charania<\/a> first reported the news. According to Charania, \u201cMorey and 76ers owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer met on Tuesday evening in Philadelphia and the decision was made to part ways.\u201d\u00a0Charania also reported that head coach Nick Nurse will retain his position. <\/p>\n Bob Myers, the president of sports for Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment, \u201cwill lead the process of identifying a new leader of basketball operations and oversee the department in the interim,\u201d the Sixers said in a press release. <\/p>\n \u201cI have a tremendous amount of respect for Daryl personally and professionally, and I\u2019m grateful for his contributions over the last six seasons,\u201d Harris said in the release. \u201cAfter speaking with Daryl, we determined that it was time for a fresh start. Bob Myers will lead the process of identifying a new leader and I believe his experience in constructing four NBA<\/a> championship teams will be a valuable resource to our organization.<\/p>\n \u201cTo our fans, your frustration and disappointment are understandable and warranted. We have fallen well short of our own expectations and failed to deliver in the way this city deserves. That bothers me deeply and I have confidence in Bob to establish a path forward for our franchise.\u201d<\/p>\n Myers joined HBSE in October of 2025<\/a> and was a noticeable courtside presence at many Sixers games last season. He won four NBA titles and two Executive of the Year awards during his time with the Warriors.<\/p>\n \u201cI know how much the 76ers mean to the City of Philadelphia, and it\u2019s important we find the right leader to shape the future of this team,\u201d Myers said. \u201cThe process will start immediately, and we will be thorough and deliberate in our evaluations. I believe this is a destination for top talent across the league and look forward to solidifying our infrastructure moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n The Sixers went 270-212 (56.0 winning percentage) with Morey at the helm. Over his six seasons, they lost four times in the second round of the playoffs and once in the first.\u00a0The franchise’s last Eastern Conference Finals appearance came in 2001. <\/p>\n After overcoming a 3-1 deficit this year to win their first-round series over the Celtics<\/a>, the Sixers were swept out of Round 2 by the Knicks.<\/a><\/p>\n Morey\u2019s tenure featured a 2022 trade to acquire James Harden<\/a> and a 2023 deal to send him to the Clippers. <\/a>Harden had requested a trade<\/a> and publicly proclaimed that Morey was a \u201cliar.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n The large, long-term contracts Morey gave Joel Embiid and Paul George have limited the Sixers\u2019 roster flexibility. <\/a>Embiid still tended to look like a superstar when available<\/a> in the 2025-26 season and George was typically very good on both ends of the floor.<\/a> However, both George and Embiid played less than half of the Sixers\u2019 games this past regular season. George turned 36 years old on May 2. Embiid is 32.\u00a0<\/p>\n The Sixers\u2019 front office generally did strong work on draft nights under Morey. Highlights include drafting Tyrese Maxey with the 21st overall pick in 2020, selecting Jared McCain at No. 16 in 2024 and taking VJ Edgecombe at No. 3 in 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n At Morey\u2019s last trade deadline, the Sixers shipped McCain to the Thunder in exchange for draft picks.<\/a><\/p>\n
