LEHIGH VALLEY, Pa. \u2013 The riders spoke, and LANTA listened.<\/p>\n

On Monday, the Lehigh and Northampton Transportation Authority shared its final plan for service changes<\/a> that will take effect on June 15.<\/p>\n

Last month, LANTA initially proposed a 7% reduction in services due to funding challenges. However, the authority held a public hearing on the service cuts at the end of April, and feedback from riders convinced LANTA to retain some trips that were originally scheduled to be cut.<\/p>\n

Based on input from riders, LANTA incorporated these revisions into its final service plan:<\/p>\n

The last trip in both directions was retained for Route 101 (Susquehanna Street), while a lower-ridership midday trip was removed instead.<\/p>\n

Two partial Sunday morning trips were added to better align with employee schedules at Lehigh Valley Mall and South Mall for Route 210 (Fullerton).<\/p>\n

Saturday service from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 6:12 p.m. was retained for Route 214 (Forks).<\/p>\n

Six out of eight Saturday trips were kept for Route 217 (Slate Belt).<\/p>\n

LANTA held a public hearing on Wednesday night in Bethlehem as it proposes another round of service cuts.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Northampton County Commissioner Jason Boulette, who was among those who provided feedback to LANTA, said the continued Saturday service on the Nazareth and Slate Belt lines is a \u201chuge win for Northampton County residents who rely on transit to live their normal lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI pointed out that these would be disproportionate impacts \u2014 that these areas have a higher population of seniors, a higher population of people living in poverty, and that our rural and small town areas have fewer transit options,\u201d Boulette said of the originally proposed cuts in a media release. \u201cI explained that these cuts would prevent people from getting to work, running errands, getting groceries, going to medical appointments. And the cuts would further isolate the elderly population at Gracedale by terminating one of their lifelines to their family members and loved ones.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the county commissioner commended LANTA for responding to feedback, he cautioned that the authority will again find itself in the position of having to make cuts if its funding shortfall isn\u2019t addressed with help from the state.
