Arielle Jacobs<\/a> (Here Lies Love, Aladdin), Grammy and Emmy Award winner Kristolyn Lloyd<\/a> (Liberation, Dear Evan Hansen), Andrew Kober<\/a> (Gypsy, Beetlejuice), and more will be part of\u00a0Rhinebeck Writers Retreat’s\u00a0May 14th reading of Lost City Radio, a new musical with book by Joel Perez<\/a> (original Broadway cast of Fun Home) and music and lyrics by Tony nominee Benjamin Velez<\/a> (Real Women Have Curves), based on the novel by Daniel Alarc\u00f3n. The reading is directed by Tony nominee Leigh Silverman<\/a> (Suffs), with music direction by PJ Ju (Big Gay Jamboree), and is produced as part of Rhinebeck Writers Retreat\u2019s Triple R Program, with Casting by Andrew Fem<\/a> and General Management by Sing Out, Louise! Productions<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Based on the acclaimed novel, Lost City Radio is the story of Norma, a radio host in a country where radio is the only source of media. Ten years after a failed attempt to overthrow the military regime, what started as a radio show meant to find people who have disappeared during the war has become a propaganda machine for the state. Norma’s own husband was one of the “disappeared,” but when a young orphan named Victor shows up at her radio station with a clue to her husband’s whereabouts, the two must work together to learn the truth and perhaps form their own family in the process.<\/p>\n

The reading cast includes Jacobs, Saajan Lakhani<\/a> (A Christmas Story), Justin Gregory Lopez<\/a> (Octet), Lloyd, Jo Lampert<\/a> (Orlando), Geena Quintos<\/a> (Miss Saigon), Jared Loftin<\/a> (Teeth), Graham Stevens<\/a> (In Transit), Chad Carstarphen<\/a> (Hell\u2019s Kitchen), Kober, and Adriana Medina Santiago.<\/p>\n

Rhinebeck Writers Retreat addresses a critical need faced by musical theatre writers: dedicated, uninterrupted time and resources to write. Lost City Radio was developed at RWR\u2019s Summer Residencies in 2022 and this reading marks the culmination of Triple R, a three-step development program designed to accelerate alumni musicals towards production. Triple R (“2 Readings and a Residency”) begins with a cold table read in NYC to hear the latest draft aloud, followed by a 5-day writing residency in Rhinebeck to further develop the work, and caps off with an AEA 29-hour reading back in NYC to collaborate with a cast and creative team. Recent Triple R projects include Starstruck by Emily Saliers<\/a>, Beth Malone<\/a>, and Mary Ann<\/a> Stratton, which had its world premiere at Bucks County Playhouse last fall, and The Real Kyle McCarren by Andy Roninson<\/a> and Sean McVerry, which will premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this summer.\u00a0<\/p>\n
