Upper Darby<\/a> died Thursday after she was shot in the head at her home during an incident described as \u201cchildren playing with a gun,\u201d authorities said.<\/p>\nPolice were called to the 100 block of Springton Road around 1:45 p.m. for the report of a shooting and found the girl in a rear bedroom with a gun next to her, police said.<\/p>\n
The girl was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll four kids inside at the time have been identified and are cooperating with the investigation,\u201d said Timothy M. Bernhardt, the township\u2019s police superintendent.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt this point, it appears to be accidental but we are still interviewing,\u201d Bernhardt said.<\/p>\n
Daniel P. McGarry, superintendent of the Upper Darby School District, said in a letter to district families that a student \u201clost their life as a result of a gunshot wound while in their home.\u201d<\/p>\n
McGarry said that authorities believed \u201cthat the gunshot was a result of children playing with a gun.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said the district was working closely with police as the investigation continued.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe urge you to discuss with your children the seriousness of playing with guns and the potential consequences,\u201d McGarry said. <\/p>\n
The district will have student service professionals available on Friday at Beverly Hills Middle School for any student who may need support, McGarry said.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlease keep the student\u2019s family, friends, and the community in your thoughts during this tragic time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
