LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – The state is making an effort to stop harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie.<\/p>\n
This week the state released its first annual report for reducing phosphorus runoffs that feed the blooms.<\/p>\n
The report details progress made including a restored wetlands effort in Lenawee County.<\/p>\n
According to the report, yearly averages from 2020 to 2024 show a 55% reduction in phosphorus runoff since 2008. Data from 2025 is still being analyzed.<\/p>\n
The report also notes that the maximum algal bloom in Lake Erie in late August 2025 covered 400 square miles, or about 46% of the record bloom area observed in 2011.<\/p>\n
