{"id":193700,"date":"2026-05-15T21:37:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T21:37:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/193700\/"},"modified":"2026-05-15T21:37:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T21:37:13","slug":"erie-county-executive-vetoes-youth-hunting-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/193700\/","title":{"rendered":"Erie County executive vetoes youth hunting law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz has officially vetoed the <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/nys\/buffalo\/news\/2026\/04\/30\/erie-county-legislature-passes-bill-for-12---13-year-olds-to-hunt-deer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">youth-hunting law passed by the Legislature<\/a> earlier this month that would allow 12- and 13-year-olds to hunt deer as long as they are accompanied by a mentor.<\/p>\n<p>This comes just two days after Poloncarz hosted a public hearing on the topic which saw <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/nys\/buffalo\/news\/2026\/05\/11\/public-hearings-wednesday-for-deer-hunting--biometric-identity-technology-law-bills\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">resounding support from residents.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Poloncarz said in part in a statement that he wants to do anything he can to prevent a child from dying:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;I recognize that since New York passed the 12- and 13-year-old hunter law, there has not been an incident in New York, and I acknowledge that. However, in other states, children as young as 9, 10, and 11 years old have died in hunting-related incidents since 2020. Just last September in Iowa, a 17-year-old was killed while squirrel hunting.
