A member of the Reading-based professional arena football team was arrested in a Berks County hotel by federal officials on charges in a shooting in Ohio, officials said.<\/p>\n
Members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force in Reading took Brendan Nichols, 29, into custody Thursday morning at the hotel in Cumru Township after receiving information that he was staying there with teammates from the Pennsylvania Benjamins, according to the Marshals Service.<\/p>\n
Nichols was wanted by the Cleveland Police Department on a charge of felonious assault with a firearm. Investigators allege that on March 27 Nichols forced his way into a residence, pistol\u2011whipped a victim and shot him with a rifle before fleeing.<\/p>\n
Cleveland police issued a warrant on April 1, and the case was assigned to the Marshals\u2019 Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, investigators developed information that Nichols was traveling with the Benjamins, an arena football team of which he was an active member, and was likely staying at a Berks hotel. Members of the Marshals task force in Reading located him there and arrested him without incident, officials said.<\/p>\n
Nichols was committed to Berks County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail while awaiting extradition to Ohio.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis arrest demonstrates the strength of coordination between U.S. Marshals task forces across jurisdictions,\u201d Supervisory Deputy Robert Clark said in the release.<\/p>\n
